Celebrating a massive triumph in the series opener, England on Tuesday named an unchanged 12-member squad for the second Test against India to be played at Trent Bridge from July 29.

Pacer Tim Bresnan was once again added to the squad that defeated India by 196 runs at Lord's on Monday even though he could not make the cut for the playing XI in the lung-opener.

England national selector Geoff Miller lauded the team's performance in the opening Test and hoped it would only improve in the remaining three matches.

"There was a lot to be pleased about from the opening Test at Lord's. We saw some excellent performances with both bat and ball which resulted in an outstanding win on the final day of what was a memorable match," Miller said in a statement.

"While the squad from the first npower Test all came through unscathed we have included Tim Bresnan in the squad for this next Test and he'll once again be pushing for selection following a short turnaround in between Test matches," he added.

An elated England skipper Andrew Strauss credited his bowlers for the massive 196-run win over India in the opening Test, saying that it was a perfect performance against a formidable batting line-up.

"Over the two innings, it was as close to perfect bowling performance as it has been in the last two-three years which is saying a lot as we have bowled quite consistently well in this period," stated Strauss after England dismissed India for 286 and 261 in the two innings at Lord's.

"It was an outstanding performance by the whole attack. they showed if you work hard with consistent line and length you could have results on any track."

Strauss picked double centurion Kevin Pietersen for special praise.

"Our first innings was a magnificent performance. Kevin was responsible for it - it was one of the best innings I have seen. He was smart enough against seamers, was prepared to graft and when the opportunity presented itself, he attacked. Others batted around him."

"It was critical that we survived the tricky first day and on the second day, after the second half it got easier. Jonathan Trott as well on the first morning of the Test gave a good example of his temperament and technique," he said.

Strauss claimed that this win has demonstrated that if the present team plays to its potential, it can beat any side.

"To be a number one side, you need to grab your opportunity and we did so very well today. We demonstrated when we play well, we are good enough."

Strauss was also full of praise for Stuart Broad. "His position has lately been called to question. It was a big test of his character and Stuart showed immense quality. He bowled very well, his 70 runs were critical to the outcome, he showed his class. It was a tiny reminder to everyone what a great talent he is."

Strauss also made a mention of Chris Tremlett whose wicket of Dhoni in the last session was the final straw for India. "He (Tremlett) is the real deal. He definitely adds to our bowling."

Man of the match Kevin Pietersen, who set the platform with his monumental knock, lauded the English bowlers.

"They were calm throughout. We have an analysis of our bowlers and the percentage (of good deliveries) was among their best," Pietersen said.

India missed Zaheer Khan for most part of the match and due to a hamstring strain and both Pietersen and Strauss were quick to acknowledge that his absence cost the visitors dearly.

"Zaheer's absence was a critical loss to them. The other bowlers had to work really hard. Ishant bowled nearly 65 overs and he would be tired in the second Test," said Pietersen.

"It's never easy to lose your frontline bowler but then these are the cards you are dealt with sometimes," remarked Strauss.

Tendulkar, who was down with viral infection, was also far from his usual self in the middle.

"Sachin was trying to salvage a draw for India. He tried his hardest. But Anderson was good enough to get him out lbw. You never want to drop Sachin. Thankfully, Anderson saved me blushes."

Tendulkar also got a reprieve when umpire Billy Bowden ruled in his favour against a delivery that TV replays showed would have hit the stumps.

Since lbws are not up for review under the DRS in this series, England were left frustrated.

"We have always wanted to play with full DRS but since you play with the rules you start a series, you take the umpires' decision on the chin, whether good or bad."

Even as the interest among fans seems to have taken the rivalry between the two sides to a different level, Pietersen was not willing to put it at par with the Ashes.

"There is real hatred between England and Australia, that cricket is totally different. For the public though, the interest is similar," he said.

There cannot be a bigger record: Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly has developed a reputation with his sharp comments and in-depth analysis of the game. He spoke to DNA at Lord's where he made Test debut in 1996. Excerpts:

How is it coming back to Lord's where you kick-started your career with a bang 15 years ago?

Lord's is a special ground and I always enjoy coming here. The atmosphere is excellent; the support is equal for both teams. It is actually great to see so many Indian supporters here.

Is there a sense of deja vu for you? Did it occur to you that you should rather be in the middle than in the commentary box?

No, no. I'm done with cricket and I'm very happy about it. I've enjoyed my game and I'm enjoying my time in the commentary box.

How do you do it? Do you prepare for it as well?

No great preparation. I go out there and say what I think of the action in the middle. It's quite easy, in fact.

Does the team have the bowling depth?

Yes, why not? Zaheer has been in tremendous form. It is unfortunate that he is not fit but Ishant (Sharma), I thought, has turned into a tremendous bowler. We bowled very well in the second innings yesterday (Sunday).

Do you think India will be able to win the series with the current bowling strength?

Why not? There is fire power. Sreesanth can be an ideal replacement if Zaheer is not fit. Ishant has been doing well any way. And Praveen (Kumar) has come off very well. I don't see too many concerns in the bowling.

What is your prediction for the series?

It is difficult to predict. The teams are evenly matched. Any result is possible. I'm expecting a very keenly-fought series.

India started winning abroad under you. What does it take to win overseas?

First thing is self belief. You cannot go out there without thinking that you can win. I tried to instill that in the players and I'm happy that is continuing. Of course, belief alone cannot get you wins. You have to prepare and perform well.

How has the team changed since you left?

Not much at all, I think. Almost the same players are there. Only Anil Kumble is missing.

How is Dhoni doing as a skipper?

The results are there for everyone to see. His real test will be how he handles the situation once Sachin, Rahul and Laxman retire. I'm sure he will have the team ready to face the situation.

Who after Sachin & Co? Does that worry you?

I'm not exactly worried. Indian cricket did not feel any vacuum after Gavaskar, Viswanath, Vengsarkar. There were Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman. So, Indian cricket is robust enough to find the right personnel.

Rahul Dravid, finally, got his century after missing it in that 1996 Test...

I'm happy for him. He is batting as well as ever. Centuries at Jaimaica and Lord's have been superb. I'm hoping he will go on.

What about Sachin Tendulkar? How can one stay motivated for such a long time?

Motivation is not an issue for him, for that matter for any player. If you are playing for India, motivation will come automatically. The key is to stay fit.

How do you look at the possible 100th international?

It's an unthinkable phenomenon. I have never imagined such an achievement is possible in the game.

So, where do you place that record among other cricketing records?

At the very top. There cannot be a bigger record than this. I rate this even higher than 99.94.

Rookie feel to Australia squad for Sri Lanka

Australia on Tuesday included four uncapped players in its squad for the three-Test tour of Sri Lanka next month, while batsman Phil Hughes was anointed as Shane Watson's opening partner.

Offspinner Nathan Lyon, batsman Shaun Marsh, and young fast bowlers Trent Copeland and James Pattinson are in the 15-man squad, but there was no room for pace duo Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus.

Michael Clarke leads the team in his first Test series as full-time captain on a tour from August 6 to September 20, which also includes two Twenty20 matches and five one-dayers.

Ricky Ponting, Watson and Michael Hussey provide experience, and chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said the squad was a good blend of young and old.

"It is obviously a very important time for Australian cricket as we strive to get back to the top of world rankings in Test cricket," he said.

"But at the same time it is a very exciting opportunity for this squad as it takes on Sri Lanka on its home soil.

"We believe the squad has a really good blend of experience and young talented players who we are sure are ready for the challenges ahead.

"There is a quiet confidence about the group, and we are sure this squad will do all in its power to get the Australian Test team back to where it needs to be in world cricket."

Hughes got the nod to open with Watson following his run splurge late in Australia's domestic season, and Hilditch believes the pairing has the makings of a great opening partnership.

"Phillip richly deserves this opportunity with his Sheffield Shield performances, and of course has already proved he can succeed at international level," he said.

"He ended the interstate season in great form during the Shield final and has continued on with a great series, featuring three hundreds, on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe."

South Australian offspinner Lyon was selected after just four first-class games, with the 23-year-old impressing on the just-completed Australia A tour of Zimbabwe.

"Nathan may be a surprise selection, but he impressed all who have seen him in the last year," said Hilditch.

"He is a young man with immense potential and we feel he will take this opportunity should he get the chance to play in Sri Lanka."

Lyon said he was stunned to get the call. "I looked down at the phone and saw Andrew's name pop up and thought 'geez, what is going on here'."

"It has certainly come out of the blue but I'm not going to knock it back, that is for sure."

Left-arm spinner Michael Beer, who played one Ashes Test last summer, was also included, while paceman Copeland was picked on the strength of 87 wickets from his 17 first class matches.

Pattinson, 21, is on the plane despite having only played eight first class games.

"James is a young fast bowler with the potential to play an important role for Australia in all three forms of the game and we look forward to watching his further development during this tour," said Hilditch.

Pattinson follows elder brother Darren into Test cricket, although his sibling only played one match when he was plucked from obscurity to turn out for England, his birth country, against South Africa in 2008.

"It came unexpected for myself and Darren really. It happened all really quick for us, it's come as a good shock," Pattinson told reporters.

"But I can ring him up and learn from him. It happened to him, so I'm sure he'll be there to wish me well and teach me a few things."

The Test series opens in Galle from August 31 with following Tests in Kandy from September 8 and Colombo from September 16.

Zaheer may not play the second Test

Injured Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan might be forced out of the second Test against England after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni stated that he would not take a risk with the fast bowler's fitness.

"We have three days but I am not 100 percent sure he will play or not," said Dhoni.

"It is a long series and we do not want to risk any further injury," he told reporters after the 196-run loss to England in the first Test in which Zaheer was absent for most part of the match due to a hamstring strain.

"If we feel he is close to 80 or 90 percent fit but playing the game may increase his chances of being injured we will call someone else in," he added.

Dhoni said given the hectic schedule, it would not be prudent to risk a player's long-term future.

"I feel with the kind of cricket we are playing it is important to get people fit and not risk someone for one individual game," he said.

Zaheer picked up the injury after just three hours of play on the opening day of the match, leaving India a bowler short in the match.

India don't value their No.1 status: Nasser Hussain

In scathing criticism of India's performance in the opening Test against England, former English captain Nasser Hussain said Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men don't seem to value their number one status given how under-prepared they looked in the match.

"I am so pleased that England won because they set the perfect template on how you should prepare for and then perform in a very important game of Test cricket."

"India were exactly the opposite. They just turned up with totally inadequate preparation and expected everything to be alright on the night. Do they not value their status as the best Test team in the world? They did not seem to here," Hussain wrote in the 'Daily Mail'.

Hussain said England have had the best possible preparation for the series and it is now showing in their performance.

"Everything that England have done this summer has been geared towards making sure their players are as ready as possible for this Test series, including Andrew Strauss playing at Taunton and Stuart Broad playing for Notts," he said.

"In contrast, India expected their top strike bowler in Zaheer Khan and their premier batsman in Sachin Tendulkar to rock up without playing a Test since January and just have a bit of a hit and giggle against Somerset before the big one. They did not help themselves," he added.

Hussain said the English team is in such fine form that India were perhaps not ready for them.

"India simply were not ready for them in this game. India have real issues. Zaheer is injured, quite probably because his body was not right for this game, and it is difficult to see how he can play in the second Test," he said.

"After that match India just have a two-day game at Northants to get ready for the third Test, when they will again have little opportunity to get themselves right for the second half of the series. What's going on with them?" he asked.

Hussain also criticised the Indian Cricket Board's insistence on not having the LBWs covered under the Decision Review System.

"For us to have a halfway house, mish-mash of a decision review system in this series has been driven by India and frankly it's confusing and pathetic. Either we have the full system or we don't use it at all. Let's not say we can have HotSpot because India like it but we can't have Hawk-Eye because they don't," he said.

India sweat over Zaheer as Trott steadies England

Test cricket lovers celebrated the arrival of the 2000th match. But even in its 134th year, the sport sadly has no mechanism to deal with its oldest foe: bad weather.

This could have been India's day --- a rarity, considering how they usually struggle at the start of a Test series. England made 127-2 with Jonathan Trott's fifty after being dropped twice. Bad light stopped play just before tea in the 50th over. Steady rain made a restart impossible.

Zaheer Khan took 2-18 in 13.3 overs. In the noon session, he walked off the field clutching the back of his right knee. The word from the dressing room is that he has strained his hamstring and is undergoing a scan. In his absence, India spread the field out, choosing to keep the runs under check rather than attack the struggling Kevin Pietersen and Trott.

MS Dhoni elected to bowl --- a decision that divided at least two former England captains. Andrew Flintoff said it was a 'negative' decision since the wicket was slow. Michael Vaughan reckoned it was a wise choice since persistent rains and made the conditions considerably pace-friendly.

While bowling first in overcast conditions certainly have their benefits, India could have justified this decision better by bowling a fuller length.

Dhoni's bowlers, though accurate for the first couple of hours, played on the England batsmen's patience rather than getting them to drive the swinging, seaming ball. They kept the ball on a good length around off-stump. Hence, not many scoring opportunities were created in the first session of 21 overs, in which England crawled to 43 for the loss of Alastair Cook, who fell LBW to Zaheer's in-swinger.

This is a huge change for India coach Duncan Fletcher. When he was with England, he favoured express pacers such as Steve Harmison and Simon Jones. Nasser Hussain commented that India beginning with two medium-pace swing bowlers is not out of Fletcher's playbook.

Praveen Kumar's inclusion meant that Sreesanth and Munaf Patel were benched. Praveen bowled tidily for a first spell of 9-4-18-0, bowling out-swingers across the two left-handed openers. But most times, Cook and Strauss could leave them alone comfortably.

Wasim Akram said India looked flat at the start and could have been better served running in with full intensity on the first morning on an important series.

England skipper Andrew Strauss rarely looked convincing today and had three lucky breaks. A couple of inside edges whooshed past his off-stump while Harbhajan Singh missed a chance to run him out. His problems outside the off-stump against left-arm pacers are well documented.

Zaheer kept attacking him using the Lord's slope. But what finally did Strauss in was a surprise bouncer. He had already planted his front foot down the pitch. Trying to fetch the short ball from outside off-stump, he could only sky it to Ishant at fine-leg.

It was the sixth time Strauss fell to Zaheer in a Test match, and the 23rd time overall to left-arm pacers.

Rahul Dravid put down Trott first ball of the day from Harbhajan. Later, as both sides laboured along in the dreary noon session, Zaheer conjured up the magical out-swinger. Trott edged it. Dhoni went for it, bailed out, and saw the ball dip on Dravid and speed away for four.

Sunil Gavaskar had suggested India's slip fielders stand a couple of paces closer considering this was a slow wicket.

As things stand, the man closest to Bradman's Test average has been dropped twice. And, weather permitting, he could make India pay.

Pak wants DRS against SL in UAE

The Pakistan Cricket Board is keen to use the controversial Decision Review System in their upcoming series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates.

"We are working on ways to have the UDRS in the series with Sri Lanka this year," a senior official of the board said.

Admitting that the biggest problem facing the PCB in having the DRS was the absence of an agreement with its TV broadcaster, Ten Sports, on its mandatory use and the extra costs involved in the exercise.

"Since having the UDRS is not part of our agreement with our broadcaster it means an extra cost of $40,000 to 50,000 for us," he said.

The official said despite these issues, the board was keen to use the DRS specially after the recent decision of the ICC that it be used in Tests and ODIs in a bilateral series with the technology of hot-spot and audio-tracking.

"As far as the use of ball tracking technology is concerned (Hawkeye) this can be used if both boards agree on using this technology although it would mean extra costs for the hosts," the official said.

The PCB official said the board was in favour of using the DRS in the coming series as technology has helped remove errors.

"Our players support this technology. We had even tried to have it for our home Test series with South Africa last year in the UAE but things didn't work out with the broadcaster. But this time we will be holding talks with our broadcasters to see how the technology can be implemented and about the extra costs involved in it," he said.

But the PCB official conceded any use of the technology would be done with the approval of the Sri Lankan Cricket.

Pakistan play their "home" series against Sri Lanka in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in October-November followed by another "home" series against England at the same venues in January-February 2012.

Vettori joins Heat for Big Bash

Former New Zealand Test captain Daniel Vettori on Tuesday became the second international to sign with Brisbane Heat for Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash next summer.

The left-arm spinner, who has taken 79 wickets in 70 career T20 games at an average of 20.96, will play alongside compatriot Brendon McCullum in the new-look domestic competition from December 30-February 5.

Heat coach Darren Lehmann said it was important to have such an experienced player on the team.

"He's obviously a leader, which is what you want, and to call on that experience and skill will be vital for us," Lehmann said.

The Big Bash League signing window closes on Friday.

Harbhajan sends notice to Mallya's UB Spirits

Harbhajan Singh has served a legal notice to UB Spirits (owned by Vijay Mallya) for a television advertisement that shows Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni "mocking" him.

The legal notice has been sent by Avtar Kaur, Harbhajan's mother, through his lawyers, Dewani Advocates & Consultants.

Harbhajan's lawyers, in the legal notice, have claimed that the commercial mocks the off-spinner, his family and the Sikh community. Advocate Shyam Dewani, one of the lawyers, said that more than the cricketer, his family was upset.

While sending the notice for the ad spoof, the off-spinner's mother Avtar Kaur said these kinds of advertisements bring "disunity and friction" in the Indian team and can be termed anti-national.

The notice demands that the company publicly apologise to Harbhajan's family "through widely-read newspapers as well as television channels prominently" apart from removing the advertisement within three days of receiving the notice.

"My client is serving you with the instant notice to give you an opportunity to accept your mistake and make amends.

"Failing this, we will have no other alternative than to take appropriate legal action including that of filing proceedings for defamation, damages and all such civil as well as criminal actions," the notice, signed by lawyer Shyam Dewani, said.

Apart from Mallya, the notice has been sent to UB Executive Vice Chairman S.R. Gupte, President & CFO Ravi Nedungadi, Deputy President Harish Bhat and Executive VP (Corporate Affairs) Nandini Verma. It also seeks a compensation of Rs. 1,00,000 to the cricketer's family towards the cost of the notice.

Harbhajan and Dhoni endorse rival brands. The Indian skipper in a McDowell's No. 1 Platinum advertisement allegedly makes fun of Harbhajan, who had featured in an advertisement for Royal Stag.

Both Royal Stag and McDowell's No 1 are competing whiskey brands in the market, coming in the same price band. The ads, however, are for the soda brands.

The Harbhajan ad for Royal Stag has the tag-line "Have I made it large?" The Dhoni ad for the McDowell's has a Harbhajan look-alike asking, "Have I made it large?" and Dhoni says, "Forget large, do something different."

In the Dhoni commercial, the Harbhajan look-alike works in a factory and gets slapped by his father for creating humongous iron balls in a tryst to 'make it large' at the ball-bearings workshop.

Sachin, Sehwag part of ICC's all-time Test XI

Cricket lovers from across the world have cast more than a quarter of million votes this month to choose their Greatest Test team of all time.

Fans voted on the ICC's official website, www.icc-cricket.com, using a short list provided by the game's governing body, to pick their leading eleven, as part of the activities to commemorate the 2000th Test Match, which will begin at Lord's between England and India on Thursday.

Four Australians, four Indians, two West Indians and one Pakistani have been named in the "people's" Dream XI. The final selection is as follows:

Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Sir Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kapil Dev, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath.

Haroon Lorgat, ICC Chief Executive, said: "The huge interest generated during the past month was amazing as media and supporters worldwide speculated and then selected the fan's Greatest Test team of all time. It supports our view of the everlasting popularity of Test match cricket.

Watson takes charge, as Clarke faces injury

Canberra, July 14 (ANI): Shane Watson had the first taste of being an Australian captain after Michael Clarke was retired hurt due to back injury.

The star all-rounder Watson was handed the captaincy when he led Australia's one-day team onto the field in a practice match against Queensland in Brisbane.

Clarke was forced to retire hurt with back stiffness after scoring 13 from 31 balls and watched on as Australia defended 263 runs at Allan Border Field, Fox News reports.

Former captain Ricky Ponting was also out of action following a calf injury.

"Clarke pulled up a little stiff which is why he retired and we are just going to take the opportunity to get everybody out there," Australian coach Tim Nielsen was quoted, as saying by Fox News.

"Ponting has had a bit of a sore calf as well which we are just being careful about," he added.

Watson, who was appointed as vice-captain in March, has been Australia's best player in all forms of the game over the past two years but has never captained a senior team in his career.

His appointment has raised questions whether he can handle the extra responsibility of leadership on top of being the side's opening batsman and fourth seamer.

But Nielsen said Watson is a true back up to Clarke, who must manage his back problem for the rest of his career, and is confident the 30-year-old will cope with the extra pressure and responsibility. (ANI)

Trott eyeing contributing to England's success against India

London, July 14(ANI): England batsman Jonathan Trott has revealed that team success rather than personal glory will motivate him against India.

Trott admits that he could not care less about his incredible run-making stats that have seen him rack up 1,867 runs and six centuries so far in 21 matches at an average of over 62.

"I don't know what my stats are. I don't pay attention to them, I try and worry about how many Test series wins I can contribute to and be a part of. That is our goal as a team and the most important one as an individual and everyone in the team feels that way," The Daily Express quoted Trott, as saying.

"I was thinking the other day that all the hundreds I've scored, we've won all the Tests I've scored them in - except the one in Brisbane where we managed to save the game. That is pleasing and contributing to winning Tests is what it is all about as an individual and contributing to the team's success," he added.

He further admitted that it would be very exciting to play against India, as he hasn't played against the World No.1 team yet.

"I'd like to think I can keep this form going and producing the runs I have. There is no reason why not. There is no reason why you can't continue. But like life, cricket is similar. There are lots of ups and downs and it's how you deal with those and bounce back," Trott said. (ANI)

Sydney, July 13 (ANI): Australia Twenty20 Big Bash team Sydney Thunder have strengthened their pace attack by recruiting West Indies quick Fidel Edwards and Australian left arm quick Doug Bollinger.

The duo will join the likes of Chris Gayle, David Warner and Usman Khawaja at the Thunder for the revamped domestic Twenty20 competition starting this summer, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Edwards has played 12 Twenty20 internationals for the West Indies, taking 10 wickets at 30.80.

London, July 14 (ANI): Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralidaran has cautioned Australia not to consider a boycott of a tour to his country, and does not share the view expressed by almost 3000 people in a poll conducted by the The Age.

"Sport and politics are different. If Australia is not going to play any more in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe ... If they only play in some countries, world cricket will die and IPL (Indian Premier League) will take over," The Age quoted Muralidaran, as saying.

Muralidaran's reaction comes in the wake of a poll involving 3527 people in which 2856 (81 percent) said that the Australian tour should not be undertaken.

The tour to Sri Lanka will go ahead as scheduled, but since the screening on Four Corners of a graphic Channel 4 documentary about atrocities committed at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war and its aftermath, unease has been privately expressed by some players.

Muralidaran is playing for English county Gloucestershire, said that while players were entitled to make individual decisions, withdrawing from the tour would have dire consequences for world cricket.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has raised no objection to the Sri Lankan tour and CA is committed to it, conscious of cricket's power as a unifying force. (ANI)

ICC Chief Executive defends Pakistan Task Team's proposals

Islamabad, July 14(ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC)'s proposals for overhauling the sport in Pakistan were the result of numerous consultations with many stakeholders in the game in Pakistan as well as regular dialogue with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat has said.

Lorgat said that PCB Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad had received the Pakistan Task Team (PTT) report over a week prior to the ICC Executive Board meeting in Hong Kong in June, and he had provided only minor observations which were incorporated into the final report.

"Many of the recommendations touched on governance issues and structures of the PCB and their relationship with the Government. At the ICC Annual Conference in Hong Kong not one single voice was raised in objection to the change in articles of association which regulate against government interference in cricket," Lorgat wrote in an article for the Daily Times.

"It must be remembered that the ICC role was to assist Pakistan cricket with constructive recommendations and the onus is now on the PCB to decide whether it wishes to embrace the recommendations in the same spirit they were made for the good of cricket in their country," he added.

Lorgat's remarks come after PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt said that the report was a "scholarly exercise" that has not made substantial steps to restart international cricket in Pakistan.

The PTT had presented a report at an ICC meeting last month with 63 recommendations - including changes to governance and moves to revive matches with India.

"While the intent (of the PTT) cannot be questioned, a few discrepancies can be identified in the report, which PCB has rectified and sent to the ICC in the hope it's taken in a positive spirit," Butt said.

He also rejected a PTT recommendation that the PCB chief should not be appointed by Pakistan's President, who is also patron of the PCB.

"The circumstances in Pakistan are unique and cricket administration requires and deserves government support. Without government support international cricket may not return to the country," Butt said.

The PTT was formed to revive international tours of Pakistan, suspended after a terror attack on the Sri Lankan team in 2009, and to strengthen the game in the country which has been battered by allegations of spot-fixing. (ANI)

Nothing better than beating India to claim No.1 ranking: Cook

Dubai, July 14 (IANS) England's one-day captain Alastair Cook is confident of his team's chances against India in the upcoming four-match Test series and says there will be nothing 'better' then beating the number one side to get to the top.

England, currently third in the ICC rankings, will dislodge India from the top if they win the home series by at least two Tests.

Cook says facing India will be a great challenge and England's recent win over Sri Lanka in the Tests and One-day Internationals have taken them in the right direction.

'It has been a good couple of months and to win the series is very pleasing. We have certainly got a lot to prove. We know as an English side, we know that we have to win. We have made a step in the right direction,' said Cook on ICC Cricket World Radio Show.

The Southpaw silenced critics of his one-day game by scoring 298 runs in five-matches against Sri Lanka and now wants to replicate the stupendous performance against India.

'It is going to be a great summer, we need to go back to Test mode. We want to be World No.1 in the Test rankings. They have got some players who will go down as all-time greats. But I am very confident that if we play well, we will be a hard side to beat,' said Cook.

The series begins with the first Test at Lord's July 21.

West Indian paceman Fidel Edwards has been the chief tormentor of Indian batsmen in the ongoing cricket series but the Barbadian is not quite happy with his effort and wants to bowl faster.

“I don't think I have been consistent...I am not consistently putting the ball in the right areas but hopefully it will come together (in the final Test),” said a Edwards ahead of the third and final Test, starting from Wednesday.

“I don't think I am back to my best... my pace has been up and down...I could bowl faster in my first spell,” he added.

Edwards has taken 13 wickets in the present series, with the best figures of 5 for 76, at an average of 19.85 but he still finds fault with his first spell of the innings.

“I have not been bowling my first spell in the right areas. Hopefully I will get this right in this game,” remarked Edwards.

Edwards has been good with the reverse swing he is managing with the older ball and India's middle order, especially the young batsmen, have consistently struggled against him.

“I have been training hard to get my reverse swing going. It's been working well for me,” said Edwards.

“I think (Suresh) Raina has played me well. (Virat) Kohli has been fighting hard but he keeps getting good deliveries,” he added.

Edwards' bit for his team has consistently been thwarted by the old firm of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman who have 212 (53.00) and 184 (46.00) runs from the series -- the highest from either sides.

“The two of them have been very good. I have grown up watching them. Laxman plays the short ball very well. Dravid is excellent too. It's pretty hard to get them out,” he conceded.

Edwards' strong showing has made him shoot up the rankings and he is presently at number 18 in the ICC Test list.

“My aim has been to be the top bowler of the world. I will try to bowl better to be number one,” he said.

PCB clears Afridi to play in SLPL

Pakistan Cricket Board said on Monday that it had given clearance to former captain Shahid Afridi to take part in the inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League starting later this month.

A senior PCB official confirmed that they had given permission for the Sri Lankan authorities to sign on around 10 Pakistani players for the league and that list included Afridi.

"We gave these permissions and clearance for the players including Afridi sometime back. But now when he individually also applies for a no-objection certificate or the Sri Lankan organizers reconfirm his availability we see no problem in giving him clearance," said the official.

Afridi, who is presently playing for Hampshire in the English domestic T20 event, was entangled in a feud with the PCB last month after the Board revoked his NOC to play for Hampshire.

The Board issued a fresh NOC after the all-rounder appeared before a PCB disciplinary committee and accepted a fine of 4.5 million rupees for breaching the code of conduct and also withdrew a petition he had filed at Sindh High Court against the Board.

The Board official said that contrary to popular belief that after withdrawal of 12 Indian players from the SLPL more Pakistani players would get an opportunity to play in the event, he expected around a dozen players from Pakistan to feature in the league.

"So far we have given around 10 clearances and they are some seven pending but they are issues over paper work and availability and we don't think more than 12 Pakistani players will play in the league," he said.

He also made it clear that even if some players and their agents independently contacted the organisers, they would still have to get NOCs from the Board.

Pakistani players have started using their contacts to secure contracts in the league after the Indian Board revoked permission given to 12 of its players to take part in the league.

The PCB official said at the moment he did not see any threat to the SLPL even though the Sri Lankan government had dissolved the interim committee.

"As far as we know the league is on as a group of people are organizing it and there is support in the government for the league. As it is the Somerset company is responsible for organizing the event and looking after foreign signings for different teams," he said.

Playing for Pakistan is like 'mental torture': Misbah

Pakistan cricket's endless parade of controversies and scandal has made playing for the national team akin to 'mental torture', according to captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

Since appointed test captain in October after Salman Butt was banned for spot-fixing during last year's test series against England, Misbah has led a team dogged by corruption allegations and political in-fighting.

Following five-year bans imposed by the ICC on Butt and two other players in February, Pakistan have been rocked by the departure of sacked one-day captain Shahid Afridi, who resigned in acrimony in May citing differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“Pakistan's players needed a union to educate them and improve communications with their coaches and paymasters in the wake of a number of ugly contractual disputes,” said Misbah, who took over the reins of the one-day side after Afridi's dismissal.

“A players association can play a positive role in preparing and grooming players for international cricket and in understanding their contractual obligations,” said Misbah, whose appointment as one-day captain sparked a row with Afridi.

“Once the contract is signed it is no use for players to complain about it. These matters must not be discussed in the media, it is better for players to directly speak to the board,” added Misbah.

Misbah's comments follow leg-spinner Danish Kaneria's legal challenge against the board's decision to overlook him for national selection.

Despite the troubles, Misbah said that he remained fit and passionate about the sport.

“I am mentally up for international cricket. As long as I am performing I will carry on, he said. Age is no bar for me. I feel a cricketer only matures after the age of 30. Fortunately that is what happened to me,” added Misbah.

Dhoni was given out due to wrong replay, confirms ICC

Dubai: The ICC today confirmed that an error by the host broadcaster during first day's play in the second Test between the West Indies and India in Barbados led to the wrong replay being shown to the third umpire that led to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's dismissal.

During India's innings, India captain Dhoni was out caught at mid-on off the bowling of Fidel Edwards.

On-field umpire Ian Gould suspected that the delivery may have been a no-ball so, as per the correct protocols, he sought confirmation from the third umpire, Gregory Brathwaite.

But the delivery Brathwaite was shown by the host broadcaster was legitimate and hence, Dhoni was given out.

However, it was subsequently established that Brathwaite had been shown the wrong replay and that the delivery that led to Dhoni's dismissal should indeed have been called a no-ball.

"The host broadcaster for this series, IMG Media, acknowledged the mistake and has apologised. Having looked into the situation, I am satisfied it was an unfortunate but honest mistake in what is a tense and live environment," said Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.

"It is worth pointing out that the umpires followed the correct procedures and are without blame in this matter.

"Seeing as the game has continued, clearly there is no opportunity to reverse the decision. We are forced now put it behind us and move on with the remainder of the match," he added. .

Pak look to finish strong against Windies

Pakistan will be looking to give unshakeable proof that the West Indies were fortunate to gain a victory in their One-day International series, when the final match is contested on Thursday at the Guyana National Stadium.

The Pakistanis were upstaged by rain and a blistering innings from Lendl Simmons to lose the previous match last Monday at Kensington Oval by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.

The visitors have an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the series, following victories in the first three matches, but they will want to sign-off with a strong performance to knock West Indies back down a few notches, particularly with the two-Test series looming.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said that though the conditions they contested the previous match were difficult, his side should have still performed much better.

"We started on a difficult pitch, but the way Mohammad Hafeez batted, we thought we would have scored 270 to 275," he said.

"But I think we missed that chance, and we did not bat well in the end. It was disappointing because we missed an opportunity to score a big total, and we have to do much better, and show more consistency in the future."

Afridi said though the Pakistanis wanted to give some of the less experienced players an opportunity to play, he still felt that they were good enough to help the side finish the series on top.

"I am pretty happy with our boys, and the way they have played in this series, so I think we can be proud," he said.

"We set a total in the previous game, and in the conditions, and with our attack, I felt it was a decent target, but the weather played a role, and we lost."

West Indies Darren Sammy was relieved to get a victory over a Test-playing nation other than Bangladesh for the first time in two years, but he is looking forward to the final match, and hoped there are no interruptions to prove that the hosts are the genuine article.

"It has been a long time since we have beaten a top side, but we took the opportunity, and came through in the end," he said.

"We needed that victory, and it was good to win against a top side, and the guys will take the positives from this game, and we will look to take confidence from it, and put it into play here."

As always, the two teams will keep their gazes fixed to the skies to see if the weather will allow them to achieve their goals. The forecast for Thursday indicated scattered thunderstorms with a 60 percent chance of rain.

Andre Botha announces retirement

Ireland all-rounder Andre Botha announced his retirement from international cricket here on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old South African-born player, qualified for Ireland on residency grounds, appeared in the past two World Cups and made 141 appearances for his adopted country.

But recent seasons had seen the left-hand bat and right arm medium-pacer, who took two for five in the shock 2007 World Cup win against Pakistan, struggling with injury.

"I have given this matter serious and long consideration, but ultimately have come to the conclusion that the time is right now," said Botha, who appeared in just two games at the recent World Cup in the subcontinent.

"I can assure you it's a matter I haven't taken lightly, but sometimes your body makes up your mind for you."

Botha took 42 wickets in as many one-day internationals and averaged just under 20 with the bat.

"Andre has been an integral part of this Irish team's success since his debut way back in 2001," Ireland coach Phil Simmons said.

"He will be sorely missed, not only for his cleverly disguised slower balls or his trademark square cuts, but for his total dedication to the cause and the team," the former West Indies batsman added.

"His courage continuing to represent Ireland with the different injuries he's endured over the last couple of years has been incredible, and shows just what a big heart he has."

Cook set to take over ODI captaincy

Alastair Cook is expected to be appointed as England's One Day Internationals captain, with Andrew Strauss set to stand down from his post. Strauss will continue leading the English Test side though.

The ECB is expected to meet on Thursday and formally announce this, alongwith a new Twenty20 captain. Kevin Pietersen and Stuart Broad are the contenders for the T20 job, which would make this the first time that England have three separate captains in all three forms of the game.

The Twenty20 captain will be needed because Paul Collingwood - who recently announced his Test retirement - is reportedly going to give up the Twenty20 captaincy.

The decision of Strauss to step down doesn't come as much of a surprise, with the batsman having indicated the possibility of his stepping down right after the World Cup, in which England crashed out in the quarter-finals after having a series of close finishes in the league stages.

Cook, who has played only 3 ODIs since December 2008, had an outstanding Ashes series in Australia, scoring 766 runs in England's historic triumph. He did captain England in the three ODIs he played in - which were all against Bangladesh in 2010 when Strauss was rested, and gave a good account of himself. England won all three ODIs, with Cook scoring 64, 60 and 32.

Shoaib wants proper farewell match

Pakistan's enigmatic fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar wants to be given an opportunity to play a final farewell match this year although he announced his retirement from international cricket during the World Cup.

Although Shoaib himself has kept a low profile since returning from the World Cup, well-placed sources confirmed that the fast bowler had conveyed to the PCB about his desire to play a farewell match.

The experienced player suffered a setback in the World Cup as his announcement after the New Zealand match led to him not getting another opportunity in the cricketing extravaganza.

Ross Taylor and Co smashed him for 28 runs in his last international over.

Worse, he was fined $2000 for misbehaving with teammate Kamran Akmal who dropped Taylor twice in one over of Shoaib.

Local daily 'The News' reported on Thursday that Shoaib had kicked Kamran on the field during the match and used abusive language which led to an ugly scene on the field.

The report stated that while Shoaib was fined and issued a notice, the management also fined Kamran $1000 for his role in the incident.

According to the newspaper, some members of the Pakistan team didn't want the board to allow Shoaib any farewell match later this year in any series as they were still upset over the incident in the New Zealand match and didn't want the speedster back in Pakistan colours.

In 2007, erstwhile captain Inzamam-ul-Haq had also announced his retirement after Pakistan were eliminated from the World Cup in the first round.

But the cricket board later allowed and picked Inzamam to play a Test against South Africa in Lahore as a farewell gesture and also rewarded him with a cash bonus.

Sources said that Shoaib had mentioned the example of Inzamam while requesting for a chance to play a proper farewell match.

"He is not satisfied that he never got a proper opportunity to play his final match and be given a proper send off by his fans and that is why he wants a farewell match," one source said.

India get rewarded for finishing as Test No.1

India will be handed USD 175,000 for finishing as the number-one Test side while also pocketing another USD 75,000 for finishing as second-ranked ODI team this season, the ICC said today.

India (128 points) has been sitting on top of the Test Championship table since December 2009. South Africa (117 points) will pocket USD 75,000 for ending in second position in the Test Championship table at the cut-off date of April 1.

Australia earns USD 175,000 for finishing on top of the ODI table with 128 points at the cut-off date. It has been occupying the number-one position on the ODI Championship table since leapfrogging South Africa and India in September 2009.

In the latest ODI rankings issued today, Australia has 129 points, eight points more than India's (121 points).

Among batsmen, Virat Kohli lost two places to slip to eighth while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar lost one spot each to be at ninth and 10th respectively.

South African Hashim Amla maintained his top spot in the batting charts while New Zealand's Daniel Vettori continued at the top of bowling list.

No Indian is in the top 10 in bowling chart with Zaheer Khan at 14th.

Australia's Shane Watson became the top-ranked ODI all-rounder and also achieved a career-best ranking in batting, jumping nine places to fourth after his record innings against Bangladesh.

Watson has piped Shakib Al Hasan into number-one position in the all-rounders' rankings after taking three wickets and scoring 294 runs in the series. He now leads the Bangladesh captain by a comfortable 44 points margin.

Watson's scores of 37, 185 not out and 72 in the series have also helped the 29-year-old Queenslander vault nine places to a career-best fourth position. He is now the highest-ranked Australia batsman with Mike Hussey staying in sixth place, captain Michael Clarke rising two places to 11th spot and former captain Ricky Ponting moving one place up to 16th position.

For Bangladesh, Imrul Kayes has climbed four places to 42nd position but Shakib has slipped two places to 26th spot.

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, Mitchell Johnson's seven wickets in the series have given him a lift of seven places and he now sits in sixth position. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) today announced that former Australian National Coach John Buchanan is to become the new Director of Cricket for NZC.

The Director of Cricket is a new role and a first for world cricket. Buchanan will report to the Chief Executive with the position based at the New Zealand Cricket head quarters in Christchurch.

Buchanan will start with NZC in May and is being appointed as the architect of the new high performance programme. He will perform a number of key duties including the establishment of clear and consistent national coaching philosophies, implement a talent identification programme and oversee the Selection Panel.

Justin Vaughan, NZC Chief Executive, said he was delighted that John accepted the role.

"John's appointment is an exciting one for New Zealand Cricket. He has a great cricketing pedigree and will provide outstanding leadership as NZC look to move forward."

Buchanan, 58, has a track record of success and ended his eight year tenure with the Australian team with the best record of any coach in International cricket history.

Cricket South Africa president ousting 'unlawful'

A South African High Court on Friday ordered Cricket South Africa (CSA) to re-instate its president Mtutuzeli Nyoka, who was fired following a public feud with the organisation's chief executive.

Nyoka took CSA to court after the organisation's members' forum, comprising provincial presidents, passed a vote of no confidence in Nyoka at a special meeting in February.

The court found that Nyoka's sacking was unlawful and should be set aside, Sapa news agency reported.

CSA said it would appeal the judgment.

"Cricket South Africa will file notice of appeal in due course," it said in a statement.

A dispute between Nyoka and CSA chief executive Gerald Majola had been simmering since Nyoka challenged the payment of a 1.7 million rand ($248,000, 172,000-euro) bonus to Majola following the staging of the Indian Premier League in South Africa in 2009.

Other key staff also received bonuses, which were awarded without the approval of CSA's remuneration committee.

Nyoka recently accused Majola of lying to him about the contents of a contract between CSA and the IPL.

The then-president claimed he was deceived into supporting Majola in a row with the Gauteng Cricket Board, which controls the country's biggest cricket stadium, the Wanderers in Johannesburg, resulting in the Gauteng board being dissolved.

Gauteng demanded to know the terms of the contract between CSA and the IPL, stating that it believed Majola had put CSA at financial risk.

Casualties of the controversy include the board's treasurer, Hentie van Wyk, and leading banker Paul Harris, an independent director, who failed to gain re-election at last year's annual meeting after querying the bonus payments.

When the payments were first made public before the 2010 annual meeting, CSA promised an independent inquiry but this was later changed to an internal hearing, headed by vice-president AK Khan, which cleared Majola of wrongdoing.

Michael Hussey scored his first one-day century in four years to help Australia complete a 3-0 clean sweep against Bangladesh with a 66-run win in the third and final match on Wednesday.

The middle-order batsman cracked two sixes and nine fours in a 91-ball 108 for his third one-day hundred, and his first since February 2007, as Australia posted a huge 361-8 in the day-night match.

Bangladesh made a bold reply before finishing at 295-6 despite an impressive 93 from opener Imrul Kayes, who hit two sixes and 10 fours in his 95-ball knock.

Kayes batted confidently against both pace and spin and looked set to complete his second one-day century before being caught behind off debutant paceman James Pattinson.

He put on 136 for the second wicket with Shahriar Nafees, who made 60 for his second successive half-century. Mohammad Mahmudullah was the other notable contributor with an unbeaten 68.

Australia virtually wrapped up the match when seamer Shane Watson dismissed skipper Shakib Al Hasan (nine) and Mushfiqur Rahim (one) in one over.

Watson, who hit a record 15 sixes in his career-best 185 not out in the previous match on Monday, earlier put Australia on course for a big total with a 40-ball 72 which contained three sixes and 11 fours.

Man-of-the-match Hussey was then involved in two useful stands, adding 89 for the fourth wicket with skipper Michael Clarke (47) and 70 for the sixth wicket with Mitchell Johnson, who hammered 41 off just 24 balls.

Hussey fell in the last over, trapped lbw by seamer Shafiul Islam, but not before boosting his team's chances of sweeping the series.

Australia got off to an explosive start after winning the toss as Watson and makeshift opener Ricky Ponting (47) added 110 runs for the opening wicket in just 11.5 overs.

Watson began aggressively, hitting Shafiul for four boundaries in an over early in his innings before pulling left-arm spinner Shakib over mid-wicket for a six to reach his half-century.

The Australian opener, who completed his fifty off just 25 balls with the help of two sixes and nine fours, was bowled in the 12th over while attempting to sweep left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak.

Ponting also played attractive shots during his 50-ball knock, hitting two fours and a six from a Mashrafe Mortaza over. He looked well set before being trapped lbw by Razzak.

Razzak finished with 3-58 and Mortaza with 3-80.

Is BCCI answerable under the RTI Act?

It seems the Sports Ministry now considers Board of Control for Cricket in India answerable under the Right to Information Act as it has transferred such an application to the cricket body.

The Central Information Commission in number of recent decisions on sports federations had declared them to be public authority covered under the RTI Act, but in 2008 Information Commissioner Padma Balasubramanian had exempted BCCI from the ambit of transparency law through her order.

The latest order of the Sports Ministry, however, cites the October 26, 2010 decision of the Kerala High Court which declared officials of Kerala Cricket Association as public servants. The appeal against the High Court order was dismissed by the Supreme Court this year.

"The High Court of Kerala in a case related to State Cricket Association, has ruled that the Federations are required to perform public duties by virtue of holding their offices and hence, are public servants.

"The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the ruling of the High Court," Joint Secretary Injeti Srinivas at the Ministry said in a reply to an RTI application seeking to know whether Supreme Court has held BCCI officials as public-servants.

Responding to the application, Srinivas who is the Appellate Authority at the Ministry "directed" the Public Information officer "to transfer the application to BCCI for response to the specific queries pertaining to them."

Activist Subhash Agrawal had sought to know from the Sports Ministry nature of assistance received by the BCCI from it, constitution of BCCI and its affiliated state-bodies, outline of BCCI budget for last two years, details of pending allegations of corruption etc against officials of BCCI.

He had also demanded information on money paid separately to each of players, coaches, selectors and members of board of BCCI in last two years, assets and awards given players, coaches and others by BCCI.

In addition, Agrawal also asked if BCCI had ever given some grant or loan to Constitution Club, New Delhi besides amount, date and purpose of such funds among other details of such financial help.

Watson can do it again: Hussey

After being treated to some wonderful stroke play by Shane Watson, which saw the opener etch his name in the record books, Mike Hussey believes that the batsman has the potential to go even further.

Watson hit a record 15 sixes in an unbeaten knock of 185 runs from just 96 balls to see Australia home with nine wickets to spare during the second one day international (ODI) against Bangladesh on Monday.

The powerful hitting exhibited by 29-year-old, who will be in action for his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals after the series, has left his teammates contemplating whether they had ever witnessed a better display.

Comparing Watson's knock with that of former cricketer Adam Gilchrist's 149 -- studded with eight sixes -- which the left-hander hit against Sri Lanka in the 2007 World Cup final in Barbados, his teammate Hussey expressed that it was difficult to separate the two innings.

"It was pretty phenomenal, consistent hitting really," said Hussey.

"I haven't seen consistent hitting like that since probably Gilly in the World Cup final in 2007. But it was a phenomenal innings and he's been able to put together quite a few in the last little period -- the 161 not out against England (in January) was a pretty amazing innings, too, at the MCG. His consistency at being able to do it is pretty amazing," Hussey was quoted as saying by AAP.

Emphasizing upon Watson's recent run of form, Hussey felt the all-rounder, who was only 15 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar's record, has the ability to go higher.

"He just keeps seeming to raise the bar all the time, so I reckon he could do it again.

"Once you've done something once, it gives you that belief that you can go on and do it again... there's no reason why he can't do it again and again," he added.

Make Afridi long-term captain: Akram

Former Pakistan great, Wasim Akram, has called on the board to repose faith in Shahid Afridi by appointing him captain of the national team on a long-term basis.

"I think Afridi should be made captain for a long term so that he gains more confidence because he is developing into a good captain," Akram said.

He also backed the all-rounder's demand for a batting coach.

"I agree the team needs a batting coach. Every team now has a full-time specialist batting coach with them and I have always believed that even at this level, the best players sometimes need to be given guidance and tips on batting issues," he said.

Akram's views are in complete contrast to Javed Miandad's, who has rejected the concept of having specialists on the support staff.

Miandad turned down the Pakistan Cricket Board's offer to accompany the team to West Indies as batting coach, on personal grounds.

But Akram pointed out that even in international cricket, a batting expert with loads of experience and background could make a big difference to the team.

"A batting coach can help batsmen sort out their technical issues and also guide them on different oppositions and conditions."

Akram also felt the selectors did the right thing by allowing pacer Umar Gul to take a break from the one-day series in the West Indies.

"I think Gul has been playing non-stop cricket for a while now and needed this rest. It is not a bad idea to have a rotation policy in the bowling department because top pacers carry the risk of getting injured due to over-work," he noted.

He hoped that his former pace partners Waqar Younis and Aaqib Javed would be able to groom the bowlers picked for the West Indies tour.

"It is good they are trying out new pace bowlers because we have lots of talent in this area.

Akram, however, felt that there was a need to teach the Pakistani bowlers to bowl with discipline and cut down on the extras.

Pakistan to develop young cricketers in Windies

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said on Wednesday he hoped to use the upcoming tour of the West Indies to bring on new cricketing talent for the years ahead.

The side fly out to the Caribbean on Thursday for a tour that will include one Twenty20 international, five one-dayers and two Tests.

With express paceman Shoaib Akhtar retired and fellow fast bowler Umar Gul rested, Pakistan have selected left-armers Junaid Khan and Sadaf Hussain -- both 21 -- and 20-year-old all-rounder Hammad Azam.

"We have selected some youngsters for the tour in the hope that they get groomed and serve the country in the future," Waqar said at the conclusion of a two-day training camp in the eastern city of Lahore.

Junaid has 167 wickets in 35 first-class matches while Hussain's tally in 18 domestic matches stands at 90.

Kamran Akmal, dropped after his sloppy wicket-keeping in last month's World Cup, made way for 29-year-old Salman Ahmed while veteran batsman Younis Khan, rested for the tour, was replaced by 20-year-old Usman Salahuddin.

Salahuddin, a right-handed batsman, has scored 1505 runs in 24 domestic matches.

"We are not taking the West Indies team lightly. We also have experience at our disposal and we hope to do well on the tour," said former captain and fast bowling legend Waqar, adding that he hoped to see an improvement in his side's batting.

"Whatever shortcomings we had during the World Cup, we want to overcome. The main thing is that I want the batsmen to show improvement."

Pakistan failed to persuade former great Javed Miandad to serve as batting coach and Waqar said the team should look elsewhere.

"I don't know why we go round and round and come back to Miandad again and again. If Miandad doesn't want to do the job then we must ask someone else for help because its not an issue of technique, its an issue of slight adjustment in batsmen's scoring runs," said Waqar.

Kirsten interested in coaching SA: report

Gary Kirsten, who stepped down as India cricket coach after guiding the team to its first World Cup title in 28 years, now wants take up the top job in South Africa even though he has not submitted a formal application before the dateline.

A report in 'The Sunday Times' said Kirsten is interested in the Proteas coaching vacancy, but he is also weighing up several other offers.

"He's expressed interest, yes," said Andrew Hudson, the national selection convener and a man who sits on the panel to select a successor to Corrie van Zyl, who has stepped down after the Proteas' World Cup debacle.

"He's certainly been in discussions with Gerald Majola (Cricket SA's CEO)," Hudson was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Kirsten is known to be keen on working with the current crop of international players, believing them to be among the most talented on the circuit, the report said.

"He is taking time off before considering his options. He is known to be calm and prudent - as befits a former opening batsman - and not overly eager to rush into a decision," it said.

Cricket South Africa, meanwhile, have approached Professor Johann Coetzee to psychometrically test all the applicants for the coaching job.

Coetzee was approached by Boeta Dippenaar, who sits on the interview panel as the players' representative, and as a result of the approach finds himself being part of the assessment.

"I'm not involved with selection of the candidate. I'm just a neutral, objective adjunct to the panel," said Coetzee, a human development consultant and psychologist who has worked as an academic at the universities of the Free State and North West.

The professor has identified 18 key characteristics pertinent to the post and will conduct his interviews and tests with a view to identifying whether the candidates possess these characteristics.

Coetzee will spend two hours with each candidate on the shortlist.

The list of shortlisted candidates has not been formally released by CSA, but reportedly includes Richard Pybus, the Cobras coach who won the SuperSport Series title last weekend, Vinnie Barnes, the current Proteas bowling coach, Duncan Fletcher, former coach of England and John Buchanan, former coach of Australia.

Morkel looks forward to IPL duel with Sachin

Delhi Daredevils' pacer Morne Morkel is relishing the prospect of another bowling duel with Sachin Tendulkar when his side takes on the Mumbai Indians in an Indian Premier League match on Sunday.

South African quickie Morkel had accounted for Tendulkar's wicket during the league stage match of the World Cup in Nagpur, which the Proteas won by three wickets.

He had also dismissed Tendulkar once during India's nearly two-month-long tour of South Africa just before the World Cup.

The lanky pacer said he had always enjoyed playing against the world's leading run-scorer in Test and one-day cricket.

"For the last couple of months, I had been regularly bowling to Tendulkar. Obviously, it's going to be one big challenge tomorrow. He is a world-class player and everyone knows that. He has been performing well for the last couple of months. It's a big challenge and as always I am looking forward to it," said Morkel.

The South African was bought by the Delhi outfit for USD 475,000 on the first day of the players' auction held in Bangalore in the second week of January this year.

When asked about sharing the dressing room with India opener Virender Sehwag, who is the skipper of Delhi Daredevils, Morkel said it's good to have a calm and composed person like him in the IPL.

"He is a good guy. Always planning and bringing out new things. It's exciting sharing the dressing room with him. He is the captain of our side and it's special to work under him. He is very calm and cool guy and it's good to have him in IPL," he said.

Morkel said it would be tough adjusting to the Twenty20 format but is ready to perform.

"It's going to be tough to adjust but IPL is a huge tournament and I am ready to play my part. It's going to be an exciting tournament with a new bunch of guys. First game is tomorrow and we are done with our preparations. Looking forward to start the tournament on a winning note," he said.

Sanga, Duminy wickets were the key: Warne

Kumar Sangakkara's wicket and the dismissal of JP Duminy were the key moments of the match due to which Rajasthan could clinch a 8-wicket victory against the Deccan Chargers, feels skipper Shane Warne.

Siddharth Trivedi, named the Man of the Match for his figures of 3/15, picked up the important wicket of Sangakkara while Warne chipped in with a couple of wickets including that of JP Duminy.

"Deccan have got a pretty good side, but getting Sangakkara and Duminy out was the key," Warne told reporters at the post-match press conference.

"Dan Christian played well for them. But had we not got those two breakthroughs, it could have been a bit harder out there in the middle. Those two wickets slowed the proceedings," Warne added.

But the Australian legend conceded that there was still a lot of work to be done especially with the younger lot in the side.

"I think we still have got lot to work to do. From the point of view of the first game with so many young kids, we have done well. We don't have any superstars in our line-up but the youngsters have really worked hard."

About the younger players in his side, Warne said that they were bit nervous which resulted in lapses in the field including a few overthrows.

"I think the young kids were bit nervous with the overthrows. But, there's a little bit to learn in the field just through experience, and if you look at the bigger picture, our experiments paid off," the satisfied Rajasthan skipper stated.

Warne also attributed promoting Botha also worked in their favour. Johan Botha, who was promoted to number 3, shined with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 67 off 47 balls which powered Rajasthan's 8-wicket win.

"Experimenting with Botha and to promote him up the order at No. 3 was our plan before the game and that worked really well. The little things we tried all seemed to have worked well in this game. That's a nice way to start, considering during the last three editions, our opening games have been pretty poor."

Warne admitted that it was getting close in the end.

"We felt like we needed three boundaries in those last four overs and then Ross hit that six and we won with eight wickets in hands. Ross brings in a lot of experience. It's a nice blend of youth and experience with both Ross and Botha in the side. It's a pretty convincing win," he said.

When asked if he enjoyed playing cricket in Hyderabad, Warne said, "For an old man like me, it is quite a nice to start with a win."

The master tweaker said that he had done a lot of fitness training in the lead-up to the event and it was "nice to have some muscles."

Warne feels that more he bowls in match situation, better he would get. The skipper was a bit worried about Jacob Oram''s groin strain. "We would take a call tomorrow. I hope it's not the end of the tournament for him," he said.

Clarke leads Australia to win with century

Michael Clarke celebrated his captaincy debut with a responsible century as Australia raced to an emphatic 60-run victory over Bangladesh in the opening one-day international on Saturday.

The stylish middle-order batsman, leading in his first one-day series after replacing Ricky Ponting as skipper last month, scored 101 for his sixth one-day hundred to help his team post a challenging 270-7 on a slow pitch.

Bangladesh never looked like achieving the target despite half-centuries from opener Tamim Iqbal (62) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (51), finishing at 210-5. The Bangladeshi captain completed 3,000 one-day runs during his knock.

"I'm very happy to make a century today. The wicket was quite slow but once you got in, it was a nice wicket to bat on," said Clarke, named man of the match.

"They (Bangladesh) have four spinners in their team and they have got a lot of talent. So we are pretty happy to get off to a good start, although there is room for improvement."

Mushfiqur Rahim (44 not out) and Mohammad Mahmudullah (28 not out) were the other notable contributors for Bangladesh, who now trail 1-0 in the three-match series. The last two one-dayers will be played in Dhaka on April 11 and 13.

"We knew they (Australia) would be tough. It was hard to chase 270 on this wicket where the ball was keeping low," said Shakib.

"We will keep sticking to our plans and hopefully we will do well next time."

Clarke, who cracked two sixes and six fours in his 111-ball knock, earlier propped up the innings just when Bangladesh looked like restricting Australia to a modest total with their tight spin bowling. Australia, who lost to India in the World Cup quarter-finals, were struggling at 138-4 in the 30th over before the skipper added 84 runs for the fifth wicket with Michael Hussey (33).

Clarke, needing five runs off the last three deliveries of the innings to complete his hundred, smashed paceman Mashrafe Mortaza for a six over mid-wicket before being caught in the deep off the next ball.

Left-arm spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo, who dismissed Hussey and Steven Smith (one) in the same over, was the most successful bowler with 3-44.

Bangladesh, electing to field after winning the toss, struck in the fourth over when Mortaza, who missed the World Cup due to a knee injury, bowled Brad Haddin for 10.

Opener Shane Watson (37) and Ponting (34) then dominated the attack with attractive shots. The opener hit Mortaza for a four and a six off successive balls before lofting spinner Abdur Razzak over mid-wicket for a six.

Ponting also looked in excellent touch, cracking three successive fours off Mortaza and hoisting Shuvo over long-on for a six. His brilliant cameo ended when he was run out going for a third run.

Rally for Sri Lanka ex-skipper flops

A campaign by fans of Sri Lanka's World Cup-losing skipper Kumar Sangakkara to demand his reinstatement ended in a flop Saturday, with only a handful of supporters turning up.

Sangakkara loyalists had organised the demonstration as a Facebook event, with 6,512 fans signing up to attend, but reporters counted only 17 people at Colombo's Independence Square public park.

"It is possible that some of the fans may have gone to another park because of a misunderstanding about the location," an organiser told reporters.

The "peaceful demonstration to take Sanga back to the captaincy" urged supporters to wear blue or white shirts, the colours of the national team, and carry the national flag.

Sangakkara, 33, quit one-day captaincy earlier this week but said he will stay on as Test captain for an interim period for the forthcoming series with England, and possibly Australia.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, currently in India to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament, has said he has no plans yet to retire as a player.

Sangakkara's deputy, Mahela Jayawardene, has also given up his position and the three-member team of selectors followed suit, leaving Sri Lankan cricket in limbo.

Clarke ton helps Australia to easy win in Dhaka

Michael Clarke got his captaincy off to a terrific start by smashing a century and leading Australia to a 60-run win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Dhaka on Saturday.

Clarke made 101 off 111 balls as Australia recovered from 90 for three to post a challenging 270 for seven before their bowlers restricted Bangladesh to 210 for five in their 50 overs.

"Anytime you make a hundred is very nice," Clarke told reporters.

"More satisfying for me is the way we played today. I thought we played some really good one-day cricket and to get a result like we did I think is very satisfying.

"Our goal is to win every game we play here. We got to improve in all areas. I thought the boys played pretty well today and I am very happy with that."

The home side started wobbling when they lost their first two wickets for nine runs and could never pose any serious threat to Australia despite opener Tamim Iqbal (62) and captain Shakib Al Hasan (51) each contributing.

All eyes were on Clarke as he began his reign as full-time Australian captain and the 30-year old middle-order batsman put on a fine display.

Clarke had captained Australia in 24 one-dayers in the absence of Ricky Ponting but took over the role properly when Ponting stepped down after their quarter-final exit at the recent World Cup.

He replaced his predecessor Ponting (34) at the crease and completed his century in the final over of the Australia innings with a spectacular six through midwicket off Mashrafee Mortaza.

Mahmudullah, who dropped Clarke on 84, took a catch at long on off the next ball to end his innings and give Mortaza his second wicket.

Ponting, playing his first game as just a batsman again, was run out attempting a third run after he had swept left-arm spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Mortaza claimed 2-65 on his comeback to international cricket after missing out on the World Cup with a knee injury.

I won't return to Test cricket, says Afridi

Pakistan's ODI captain Shahid Afridi has ruled out returning to play Test cricket despite being urged to lead the side in all three formats of the game by former skipper Imran Khan.

Afridi decided to retire from Test cricket last year although he was named captain for the entire Test and one-day series against Australia and England.

He retired from Tests after Pakistan lost to Australia under his captaincy and since then the flamboyant all-rounder has focused on playing just one-dayers and Twenty20 cricket.

"I don't think I am the sort of player who is ideal for Test cricket. So I have no plans to make a comeback to Test matches," Afridi told reporters at a function hosted for the World Cup team.

Afridi insisted that he enjoyed playing limited overs cricket and wanted to focus on these two formats and do justice to his captaincy.

"I am thankful to those former players who believe that I should also lead the team in Test matches but I don't think I am cut out for the five-day format," he said.

Imran has said that Afridi can return to Test matches primarily as a bowler.

Afridi, however, said that he was keen to make up for his relative lack of success in batting.

"I will focus a lot on my batting on the coming tour to the West Indies because I know people want to see me scoring runs. Now even my daughter has started saying 'Baba Boom Boom out'," Afridi said.

The experienced all-rounder, who has made 320 ODI appearances, said he was confident of making his mark as a batsman in the West Indies.

"Batting is one department I want to regain my form," said Afridi who last year scored two hundreds in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

Will never compromise on pace, says India's fastest Aaron

When the speedometer showed that Varun Aaron bowled a 153 kmph delivery during Jharkhand's Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat, not many people believed that the stockily built little--known lad could work up that amount of pace.

"When you are bowling, you are unaware about the amount of speed you are working up. I only came to know about my feat when we came back in the dressing room," Aaron told PTI.

Apart from Ishant Sharma, who clocked 150kmph plus during the CB series in Australia in 2007--08 season, none of the other Indian bowlers in recent times have hit the mark.

Aaron, who will be playing for Delhi Daredevils, in the IPL knows that everyone would expect a repeat of his performance and he is up for the challenge.

"It feels great that my feat has been acknowledged. My strength has been bowling fast and I will stick to it," 21--year old from Jamshedpur said.

The general tendency among the Indian bowlers after an injury has been to reduce pace and focus on line and length.

Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel have been two prime examples sacrificing pace for line and length.

"I can talk about myself that I came back from stress fracture and still bowled fast. I am regularly hitting 140 kmph plus during matches. I will never compromise on pace," said Aaron, who recently got a five--wicket haul against West Zone in a Deodhar Trophy match.

Although he hails from the Indian captain's state, Aaron is yet to meet Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"I have never met Dhoni as when he last played for Jharkhand, I was playing for Jharkhand Under--15s."

Aaron was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad during the last edition but didn't get a chance to play any matches.

"I felt bad as I was match--fit during the second half of the tournament and could have played in the last four matches," he said.

However, the stint with Wasim Akram during KKR days proved to be helpful.

"I got some invaluable tips from Akram during my KKR days. One of the main things he taught was how to get reverse swing with a ball which is less than 20 overs old."

A product of the MRF Pace Foundation, Aaron was lucky enough to get guidance from the legendary Dennis Lillee.

"The best part about being under Dennis Lillee was his method of coaching. Lillee never tries to change any bowler's natural action. If someone has side--on action, he would never force the bowler to change. May be he would suggest some corrective measures," he explained.

Sachin Tendulkar has been "unbelievable" in the last two years and keeps getting better with age, feels 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev.

"Sachin in the last two years has been unbelievable. This genius is the other way around - the older he gets, the more he plays like a champion," Kapil Dev told members of the Indian Journalists Association.

The former all-rounder was all praise for the current Indian team under Mahendra Singh Dhoni which won the ICC Cricket World Cup last week in Mumbai.

"India has a team who can beat anybody. They still are not playing to their potential. The Indian team is far better than any other team, without doubt," he said.

Asked about the secret of the Indian team's success, Kapil said, "India's growth is seen in every championship - Commonwealth, Asian games and World Cup. We are definitely flying and flying very well and shining. Now India is the World Champions, besides being No 1 Team in the world in Test cricket.

"We have put money on the table and we have shown that we can play well too. That is what the World Cup has done to India. Now the only thing is when you reach the top position, your attitude changes," he added.

Asked why the team had faltered in the run up to the final, Kapil said, "When you have such a strong batting line up, complacency sometimes sets in. Despite that they were winning. They are far better players than they performed. Even Dhoni fired only when it was needed most, in the final."

The former pacer was also lavish in his praise for India's dashing opener Virender Sehwag: "He is a ruthless player. He changes the dynamics of cricket altogether. He keeps the game so simple."

Kapil said India could improve further if the team gave more attention to its bowling department.

"Yes, bowling is a matter of concern," he said.

Asked to compare the current team with the one that won the World Cup in 1983, Kapil said, "This cricket team is far better than the 1983 team. We did not have any experienced players in the 1983 team. We were absolutely raw, no big match temperament. But we combined better.

"But in the present team there are stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, M S Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh. In 1983, man to man, West Indies was far better than us."

Asked whether IPL had its effect on the Indian side, he said, "Everybody benefited from IPL. There are both positive and negative sides. The positive is you start learning to win. The negative is you don't get enough rest."

Kapil said the BCCI should put money in junior cricket and Ranji Trophy.

"They have to make up their mind. If we want growth in sports, then school sports have to be given due attention. If we can give facilities we can have 10 Sachins and Dhonis in the country.

"During our time, Sunil Gavaskar was like a God and if we don't get another Sachin, it will be sad."

Asked whether cricketers should be exempted from tax for the prize they win, Kapil Dev said, "The law should be uniform for all sportsmen. Other sportsmen who have got laurels in athletics, badminton and other games must be given same exemptions."

Australia's Michael Clarke will be determined to make a strong start in his new role as captain when he leads against Bangladesh in a one-day series starting in Dhaka on Saturday.

The stylish middle-order batsman last month replaced Ricky Ponting as skipper at a time when Australia are trying to revive their fortunes in both Test and one-day cricket.

Australia not only lost the Ashes against England at home last year but also failed in their bid to win a fourth successive World Cup when they crashed to India in the quarter-finals, both the defeats coming under Ponting.

Ponting, with 13,288 runs in 359 one-day internationals, has retained his place as batsman in the squad for three matches against Bangladesh.

"Having his (Ponting's) experience around the group is very important for our development moving forward," Australia vice-captain Shane Watson said Wednesday.

"We have got three games in Bangladesh with a new captain that will add a slightly new dynamic to our team. I think it's really an exciting phase in Australian cricket." Australia began their tour on Thursday with a 90-run win over a Bangladesh Cricket Board team in a practice match in Dhaka, with Clarke, Ponting, Brad Haddin and Mike Hussey all scoring half-centuries.

Paceman John Hastings bagged four wickets, including a hat-trick.

Australia have made a few changes to their World Cup squad. David Hussey opted out of the series, while spinner Xavier Doherty and paceman James Pattinson have come in place of Jason Krezja and Shaun Tait.

Former South African paceman Fanie de Villiers feels that either Hashim Amla or AB de Villiers should succeed Graeme Smith as the national cricket team's captain.

Citing that the only criteria for the new captain should be that he has to be popular with cricket fans, De Villiers told the Afrikaans weekly Rapport that both Amla and AB fulfil this condition.

"If people do not love him, you can forget about it. That's why I believe that AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla are the only two candidates," he told Rapport.

"Stick your pride in your pocket and learn from guys who know what they are talking about. There is enough talent in this country to make South Africa a world power in cricket," De Villiers suggested Cricket South Africa (CSA).

"The BCCI has categorically told us that if any cricketer needs rest, he can take it. There is no problem," Sehwag said it in a matter-of-fact tone on Wednesday.

Ruling out the theory that IPL could be hectic for the Indian cricketers, as it comes bang after the World Cup, Sehwag said: "IPL is not hectic. Twenty20 is fun and the IPL offers enough rest, as there are gaps in between the matches. It's a great opportunity for the youngsters to come and show their talent."

When asked about his dismissal in the final match without scoring a run, Sehwag answered boldly. "Individual performances don't matter much. It's all about the team. In the World Cup, we played for each other and the main thing is we are the champions."

The swashbuckling batsman also said that the Indian team has a lot to achieve under MS Dhoni. "Some of the greats have already praised him. But all I say is that the Indian team has a lot to achieve under him," he said.

Just four days after living the most emotional moment of his life, Sachin Tendulkar was back at the venue.

On Saturday, the maestro had won the only international trophy missing from his cabinet - the World Cup. Less than a week later, he was there again, this time as the captain of the IPL team Mumbai Indians, who sweated it out under lights with a practice game. Dressed in casuals, Sachin, with wife Anjali, looked pleased as punch. His team, MI, also wore a solid look as the likes of Kieron Pollard and Andrew Symonds trained with the rest of the squad.

After arrival Tendulkar chatted with MI's fielding coach Jonty Rhodes and head coach Robin Singh for a while, before he was 'sought out' by owner Nita Ambani, whose husband, Reliance Industries' Mukesh Ambani, owns the side. Mukesh was there too.

Recalling the moments after the famous triumph, Tendulkar said: "The journey from the stadium to the hotel was amazing. The whole nation was celebrating. My mother was very emotional. I remembered my late father too."

The great man defined the significance of this win to Gennext aptly, as he said: "What India's 1983 World Cup win did to me, 2011 win will do to Arjun (his son)."

So is Arjun on his way to emulating the biggest footsteps in cricketing history? "I don't want to force my son into any career."

We spoke to Pakistan born singer Adnan Sami, who is `surprised' at such an uncalled for and wrong statement from a cultural ambassador of sports like Shahid Afridi.

"I would be really surprised if Afridi meant what he said. And if we have to take it on face value than I don't agree and support a thing of this sort. It's an extremely sensitive issue and this kind of statement is not needed. It's wrong", says the singer who feels he himself is a classic testimony of people's love and respect for a cultural ambassador in India.

"When people love you for your cultural contributions, geographical boundaries become non existent. I still find hard to believe that somebody like Afridi, especially who is a sports ambassador of a country and responsible for contributing to the ongoing Indo-Pak peace process, can make such a blatant statement. There's so much responsibility on them."

Adnan harps on the fact that negative statements are outcome of a confused mind. In case of the Pakistan's ODI cricket captain, Adnan attributes the statement to Afridi's frame of mind, "We do not know on what context he may have said, and how much of it is misinterpreted. However, cricket lovers will always love cricketers. They are loved for their art," concludes Adnan.

Why say things after going back home? Clearly, he wants to divert attention of his team's loss to India by stoking the tension that the two countries historically have. This is really cheap, given that both the countries and its people want peace. A captain of a national team should be a responsible man."

Anna adds, "Pakistan played awesome cricket through the tournament and Afridi's rant has just taken away all that from our minds. His statements are not true. I saw how people on the streets welcomed Pakistanis and had meals with them. When the Pakistani premier and his janta of reporters wanted to see the match from the stands, we made sure that they got space. We crunched and stood but made sure that they had the best view.

Afridi should ask Shoaib Akhtar about the adulation he got. People, including me, went up to him, hugged him and said that they will miss him because it was his last international match. Afridi should concentrate on his cricket and play a little better next time to get the spotlight. He should do a poll with the people who came to India and ask them about India's hospitality before shooting his mouth off. I have lost respect for him and I am not afraid to say this — maybe in front of entire India."

Speaking of genius, India could not have won the Cup without the irrepressible Dhoni. You can rave about other performers in the team but they are dwarfed by Dhoni's impact on the tournament.

Who could have known when he was picked to lead India few seasons back that hidden behind the exterior of a placid rustic face was not a simpleton from Ranchi but a shrewd sinewy competitor. Any other person belonging from such an unfashionable part of India, thrown at the deep end to lead the greats of the game, would have suffered from a seizure of low esteem.

But Dhoni is built like a fortress, impenetrable and grand. Sanjay Manjrekar told me that when he popped a question to a great Indian batsman about Dhoni's leadership and what makes him click as a leader of legends, he replied his ability to know his boundaries.

He may have never crossed his limits with Sachin or Sehwag, but that did not make him a soft captain. In fact, he was not shy to throw a challenge at his men after the South Africa choke, when in a shielded attack, he denounced the penchant of few to play more for the gallery than the cause of the team.

Captaincy beside other things is about straight talking and timing a warning to the players to wake them up to the contest. India never looked back in the tournament after that siren was played by it's captain.

The benching of in-demand Yusuf Pathan for Suresh Raina was another jigsaw that he solved effortlessly. Such gestures showed his uncluttered approach towards cricket, based on his own analysis and gut feeling, not influenced by popular perceptions.

A captain who thinks without a bias and knows the true value and potential of his troops is a player's dream. This trust and mind set contributes to a healthy dressing room environment which inspired India to take the leaders position at the podium.

A World Cup victory can not be weighed in any concrete measurement. How can you have a scale for pride, passion, delight or honour. India got the lot and more from Dhoni's team.

It's now it's duty to use responsibly the status of the World Champion tag and show, with grace and dignity, the leadership qualities in governing the game. It has to deal intelligently with thorny issues like the DRS, playing Pakistan, players' fatigue, managing the three formats to ensure their attractiveness and efficacy, globalisation of the sport and helping the minnows.

Even though it may have been hard on the Associate members but the decision of a 10 team World Cup is justified. Fans want quality and competition at such a high profile event and we saw quite a few mis-match ties in this WC which lowered its image.

Having said that the minnows need constant grooming and attention as disengagement will defeat the purpose of globalisation. They need nurturing and caring and should be exposed to big events only after they have registered an improvement. Getting bashed at world events would not only dent them mentally but it would be bad advertisement for the game of cricket.

India produced a calm, matured performance to lift the World Cup. You have to admire the self-belief and class of Dhoni and his men, for not once did the team flinch in the eye of the storm. It was service as usual, whether Mahela was playing a classic or Sehwag and Tendulkar had been condemned to the confines of the dressing room.

India remained unfazed and ran past all hurdles with Dhoni the magnificent, clearing the flag post with a perfect straight drive to win the race for India. And for Tendulkar.

In sports you can prepare a life time and still not make the podium. Even with an astonishing body of work behind him, Tendulkar was pricked by the thought of a win less World Cup career, a heart ache that he had shared with his team and country.

Pakistan at this WC may have returned home empty handed but it won the hearts of it's people. The players were greeted like heroes because Pakistan became one and united under them.

The World also got to see the strength of Indo-Pak contest. All those people in positions who were cold and indifferent towards it were seeing queuing up to use the occasion to cash in.

The governments, the media and the ICC had been given enough evidence in the past also, of the enormous strength of Indo-Pak tussle, to know that uncoupling the two could mean a turbulent world and a colorless cricket calendar.

Yet, all of them allowed the most engaging cricket rivalries to get stuck by petty politics. To me that game at Mohali was the heart of the World Cup more than the final at Mumbai

Afridi says India were deserving winners

India is lucky to have a "stable" captain like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, according to Pakistan's ODI skipper Shahid Afridi who is still trying to play down his negative remarks against Indians that caused an uproar.

"I thought Dhoni led the Indians very shrewdly and performed brilliantly in the final. India is lucky to have a stable captain like him, Afridi told PTI in an interview.

"He had a big role to play in the Indian victory and I am sure this victory means a lot for Indian cricket and their people. But I also hope the World Cup coming back to Asia will also boost the sport in this region again and normalise bilateral Indo-Pak cricket relations," he said.

Afridi acknowledged that India were the better side on that day and deserved to win the World Cup. "They were the better side and deserved to win the world cup. Any side that can beat us should win the World Cup," he said.

Afridi heaped praise on Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, saying that his hunger for runs is amazing and he still has plenty to offer to Indian cricket.

"His hunger for runs is amazing and only he can best decide what he wants to do in the future. But I can tell you this age is no bar to his success in either Tests or one-day internationals," he said.

Afridi said he did not have any words to describe the Indian maestro and disclosed that he has a framed jersey autographed by Tendulkar in his drawing room.

The Pakistan captain once again played down his negative remarks about Indian people that he made on a Pakistani television channel talk show that has caused an uproar in the neighboring country.

"I have nothing against the Indian people and I have always enjoyed going to India as the people there appreciate and support good cricket and players," Afridi said.

"The remarks I made on the show have been misunderstood and taken out of context. My main emphasis was that sports should not be mixed with politics and there were some elements who didn't want the people of the two countries to get closer," Afridi clarified.

"It is unfortunate whenever someone tries to bring politics into sport. This is unacceptable and will only lead to misunderstandings," he said.

Afridi's remarks about the Indian media being negative about Indo-Pak relations and the Pakistani media being 100 times better have also caused a furore.

We were gutted: Muralitharan

"We were gutted", Muttiah Muralitharan said on Wednesday about Sri Lanka's defeat by India in the World Cup final, a match he had hoped to be the grand finale of his career during which he has collected 1347 international wickets.

The Lankan team thought that 274 was a good total but "God does not give everything", the off-spinner recalled about last Saturday's final at the Wankhede stadium.

The match had been billed as a contest between two of the game's greatest, Sachin Tendulkar and Muralitharan. The Indian fulfilled his dream of a World Cup win but the Sri Lankan went wicket-less.

Muralitharan had ended his Test career last year on a sensational note taking his 800th wicket with his last ball against India. There was no such fairytale ending to his ODI career during which he took 534 wickets.

"It simply wasn't our day", he said adding," what we didn't expect was the dew to come in. From the 25th over onwards the dew was there it was difficult to bowl and the ball started to come onto the bat nicely".

Looking back at his 20-year career which had its share of controversies with regard to his bowling action, Muralitharan said that the 1996 World Cup win remained the greatest moment in his cricketing career.

Asked if he believed that his record of 800 Test wickets would be broken, he replied, "you never know. For a long time 300 wickets in Test cricket used to be the benchmark.

"It took a long time to take it to 400 and that remained for a long time. Now it's 800. If someone has a long career and is able to keep out of injuries it could happen", he said.

Tendulkar and Brian Lara are the two best batsmen he has bowled to, said the veteran, adding that it was very difficult to single out one.

"Both of them have excellent records. Lara scored over 600 runs during a series held here in 2001. Sachin has had his moments against me and I have enjoyed some success against them as well. It all depends on form, situation and things".

He was full of praise for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni under whom he played in IPL for Chennai Superkings. "MS is sharp and does not lose his cool when things are tough.

"He remains calm and takes decisions. When tension is high, it is very important to remain calm. It is not easy, but MS has been able to do that. And that is one reason for his success", he said.

Bayliss gives Chappell credit for India's success

Speaking exclusively to Headlines Today, Warne has confirmed that he does not intend to coach India. Warne emphaised it would be difficult for anyone to emulate Kirsten's hugely successful tenure, but made it clear 'It cannot be him'.

The Home Ministry is seriously considering the rising chorus for the batting maestro to be bestowed with the Bharat Ratna, sources said.

The demand to honour the batting maestro with the Bharat Ratna had gained momentum after he scored a double ton in the ODI series against South Africa last year.

Headlines Today was the first channel to initiate a campaign for a Bharat Ratna for Sachin.

Now Tendulkar's name for the honour has been recommended by a number of politicians as well.

In fact, the Maharashtra assembly has passed a resolution requesting the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna on Tendulkar. The BJP too has demanded highest honour for the players.

If Sachin is conferred with the honour, it would be another first. No other sportsperson has ever been given the Bharat Ratna.

Meanwhile, former Indian Skipper Rahul Dravid has said that Sachin is already a Bharat Ratna for the country.

World Cup: Afridi slams Gambhir for 26/11 remark

Days after winning millions of hearts with his remark on ending the hatred towards India, Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi disappointed his Indian fans saying that the Indians were not as large-hearted as Pakistanis.

Speaking during a talk show on a Pakistani news channel, Afridi was asked about the relations between India and Pakistan when he responded that the Indians would "never have hearts like Muslims and Pakistanis". He even termed the talks between the two countries futile.

"They (Indians) will never have hearts like Muslims and Pakistanis. It is a very difficult thing for us to live with them (Indians) or to have long-term relationship with them. Nothing will come out of talks. See how many times in the past 60 years we have had friendship and then how many times things have gone bad," Afridi said on Sunday.

In fact, his comment on batsman Gautam Gambhir, who dedicated the ICC World Cup to the victims of 26/11 Mumbai attack, was even more shocking.

Reacting to Gambhir's gesture Afridi said: "I think they were very stupid comments by Gautam Gambhir. I was not expecting this from Gautam. This is all politics, what do you know about who carried out the Mumbai attacks?"

He also criticised Interior Minister Rehman Malik for warning the Pakistani team not to get involved in match-fixing ahead of the Mohali semi-final, which they ultimately lost to India.

Afridi blamed media for the souring relations between the two neighbours. Asked about the Indian media's coverage of the Pakistani team during the semi-final against India, the skipper said that Indian media has a very negative approach.

"Indian media is very negative. They blow up every small issue. Media is mainly responsible for Indo-Pak souring relations," Afridi said.

Without naming a third country, Afridi also seemed to blame the US for the history of poor relations between the two south Asian neighbours.

"We don't want to fight with each other but a third country everyone knows which one it is trying to spoil our relations. (This country) is taking advantage of Pakistan and wants to take advantage of India. I don't want to go into details but these people will not let us come together," he added.

India is lucky to have a stable captain in Dhoni: Afridi

"I thought Dhoni led the Indians very shrewdly and performed brilliantly in the final. India is lucky to have a stable captain like him," Afridi told PTI in an interview.

"He had a big role to play in the Indian victory and I am sure this victory means a lot for Indian cricket and their people. But I also hope the World Cup coming back to Asia will also boost the sport in this region again and normalise bilateral Indo-Pak cricket relations," he said.

Afridi acknowledged that India were the better side on that day and deserved to win the World Cup.

Afridi heaped praise on Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, saying that his hunger for runs is amazing and he still has plenty to offer to Indian cricket.

The Pakistan captain once again played down his negative remarks about Indian people that he made on a Pakistani television channel talk show that has caused an uproar in the neighboring country.

"I have nothing against the Indian people and I have always enjoyed going to India as the people there appreciate and support good cricket and players," Afridi said.

"The remarks I made on the show have been misunderstood and taken out of context. My main emphasis was that sports should not be mixed with politics and there were some elements who didn't want the people of the two countries to get closer," Afridi clarified.

"It is unfortunate whenever someone tries to bring politics into sport. This is unacceptable and will only lead to misunderstandings," he said.

Afridi's remarks about the Indian media being negative about Indo-Pak relations and the Pakistani media being 100 times better have also caused a furore.

"I don't want to sound condescending but I have always wanted good relations between the two countries and I have in my own way tried to play a positive role," he said.

"Even when we returned from India after playing the world cup semifinal in Mohali I said that Pakistanis should not treat cricket matches with India as war as in other things we tend to have common interests," Afridi noted.

Afridi pointed out that there were some elements in the Indian media who created misunderstandings or demeaned Pakistanis.

"Even when I said that Sachin Tendulkar would have to wait for his 100th century after the semifinal against us, my remarks were misinterpreted and played up negatively by some in the Indian media.

"I admire Sachin Tendulkar for being one of the best role models for young cricketers and no one in Pakistan even doubts his greatness as his record speak for himself.

"All I had meant was that being the captain of the opposing team, we would not allow Tendulkar to score runs or get a century against us which any opposing captain would say about an opposing batsman," Afridi explained.

The Pakistan captain said the national team had gone to India with the message of peace.

"I think our conduct in the semifinal and during our stay in India is proof enough of our intentions. Pakistan has always been keen to have normal cricket relations with India," he said.

"I still say Pakistan and India should have normal bilateral relations in cricket and there should be regular exchanges between the two countries," he added.

Afridi explained that his remarks on the talk show were in response to a question about how the Indians were looking at the semifinal match result and about some people introducing politics into cricket with Pakistan.

"There are positive people even in the Indian media but recently in India we as a team were sad over the way some sections of the Indian media did stories about us and how they portrayed us," Afridi said.

He said because of these negative elements, Pakistani players remained out of the Indian Premier League.

"When you play a cricket match with India, the intensity level is high but that is only on the field and it is unfortunate when a wrong colour is given to a match or relations between players."

Afridi said cricket can bring the two countries closer and it was a very positive gesture on part of the Indian Prime Minister to invite his Pakistani counterpart to Mohali for the match.

"I know for a fact that Pakistanis who were in Mohali for the match enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were looked after well even though the disappointment of losing the semifinal was great," he noted.

Australian spin legend Shane Warne on Wednesday denied media reports that he was interested in coaching World Cup champions India.

"Just got told on bus - apparently I put my hand up to coach India. Wow - first I have heard of it - Sorry to disappoint but never said that!!!" Warne tweeted.

Leg-spinner Warne, 41, is in the country to take part in the Indian Premier League where he leads the Rajasthan Royals franchise in the lucrative Twenty20 competition, starting on Friday.

Local media reports earlier Wednesday said Warne had shown interest in the job.

"It is a very difficult job to be India coach, it is never easy," Warne was quoted as saying in the Mail Today newspaper.

"But with India doing so well, it is a lot easier to take over right now than it has been in the past. I'll enjoy working with the Indian cricket team for sure."

India are without a coach after former South African batsman Gary Kirsten stepped down following the World Cup victory in Mumbai last week.

Warne said Kirsten had set high standards during a successful three-year stint with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team.

"Kirsten is a quality person and it would be hard to find a replacement for him. Under him, the Indian team has reached the number one spot in Tests and won the World Cup," said Warne. "He is a fantastic coach."

Pakistan axe struggling Kamran Akmal

The Pakistan selectors on Wednesday dropped faltering wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal from the one-day and Twenty20 squad for this month's tour of the West Indies and rested senior players.

The 29-year-old was criticised for dropping crucial catches during the World Cup, where Pakistan lost in the semi-finals to arch rival India.

"We have given Kamran Akmal a break because his wicketkeeping was not up to the mark during the World Cup," chief selector Mohsin Khan told AFP. "We think Kamran needs a rest."

Local media said the wicket-keeper will also lose his Test place to younger brother Adnan Akmal, part of the Test team to New Zealand earlier this year.

Mohammad Salman, 29, will keep wickets in the Twenty20 and one-day matches.

Pakistan will play a Twenty20 international, five one-day games and two Tests on the month-long tour, starting from April 18.

Khan said the tour gives Pakistan an opportunity to test new players.

"We have chosen the team with a plan to try some youngsters who can serve Pakistan in the future," said Khan. "Younis Khan and Umar Gul have been rested while Abdul Razzaq could not fit into the team."

One-day skipper Shahid Afridi had hinted that senior players would be rested to give younger team members a chance, prompting Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Gul -- all part of the World Cup squad -- to be left out.

Afridi will not be part of the Test team after retiring from the longer version of the game last year.

Misbah-ul-Haq will lead Pakistan in the Tests, for which a squad will be announced later.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni has never been one to mince words and always speaks his mind, and he voiced what many people who had seen the Indian team's schedule has concerns over: the hectic nature of the schedule. Dhoni said that the crammed calendar this year will drain the players both physically and mentally.

"It does affect the performance of players. The physical aspect you can battle but because of the amount of cricket (you play) at times you find yourself mentally and emotionally quite drained," Dhoni told a press conference in Chennai when asked about the crammed schedule ahead this year.

Less than a week after the conclusion of the World Cup that lasted over 40 days, IPL-IV kicks-off on Friday and will last 50 days. Indian players will play series against West Indies, England and Australia later in the year.

"After the IPL, India play the West Indies series, we then go straight to England, we come back, if we qualify (in the IPL) you play in the Champions League. Then there is another couple of tournaments before you move to Australia, so it's quite a hectic schedule ahead of us," Dhoni said.

"Even if the demanding schedule may not affect all the players, it will affect quite a few players who have been part of all the cricket we have played for about the past six months," he added.

Dhoni had spoken against the busy schedule just before the World Cup, saying it made players physically and mentally tired. That led to an angry reaction from the BCCI who said that players are permitted to take rest whenever they feel tired.

The Chennai Super Kings skipper was in the city to kick-start CSK's latest IPL season. CSK won the tournament last year and also the Champions League Twenty20.

Australia's Watson looking to new era

"We have got three games in Bangladesh with a new captain (Michael Clarke) that will add a slightly new dynamic to our team.

Australia, seeking a fourth successive World Cup, were knocked out in the quarter-finals when they lost to India in Ahmedabad last month.

The disappointment followed the bitter blow of the home Ashes series loss to England.

Clarke replaced Ricky Ponting as Australia's captain following their World Cup exit, with Watson named his deputy.

"One of the special things that happened in my cricket career is to be a part of the leadership group that is now really working very hard and trying to turn things around," said Watson, 29.

"There is not going to be any drastic change. Hopefully, I can contribute and Clarke can contribute to help us to play more consistent cricket. I am very excited about my new role in the leadership group."

Ponting retained his place in the side as batsman, a decision all-rounder Watson hailed as "absolutely brilliant".

"Having his experience around the group is very important for our development moving forward," said Watson, who has 3,643 runs and 130 wickets in one-day internationals.

Australia will play the one-dayers in Dhaka on April 9, 11 and 13.

"This is my first tour to Bangladesh and it will be great to see different conditions," he said. "No doubt Bangladesh at their best can play unbelievable cricket in these conditions."

Watson also said a qualification process should be put in place for smaller teams to be able to play in the next World Cup in 2015.

Law becomes new Sri Lanka coach

Sri Lanka Cricket on Wednesday promoted assistant coach and former Australian batsman Stuart Law to guide the national team ahead of next month's tour of England.

"He will be the new interim coach," a spokesman for Sri Lanka Cricket, the governing body of the sport in the island, said.

Law has been assisting Sri Lanka's outgoing Australian coach Trevor Bayliss since November 2009.

Sri Lanka tour England in the second week of May for three Tests and five one-day games.

Bayliss, who managed the team for four years, announced his decision to quit ahead of the World Cup 2011, which Sri Lanka lost by six wickets to India in the final. He is due to coach New South Wales.

Law's interim appointment comes amid a major shake-up in Sri Lanka cricket following their World Cup defeat.

Veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene quit as vice-captain and a three-member selection committee resigned Wednesday, a day after skipper Kumar Sangakkara gave up his position.

England games 'winnable' says Trott

England batsman Jonathan Trott Friday insisted the side's three remaining World Cup group matches, all against Test opposition, were "winnable" after their shock loss to Ireland.

England, who face South Africa in Chennai on Sunday, went down by three wickets to the Irish in Bangalore this week as Kevin O'Brien struck the fastest-ever World Cup hundred in a blistering assault.

That loss, together with a tie against India, has cast major doubts over England's ability to qualify for the quarter-finals with matches still to come against Group B leaders South Africa, Bangladesh and the West Indies.

"We are in a World Cup, three (group) games to go. It's not all doom and gloom," said Trott, who top-scored with 92 in England's 327 for eight against Ireland on Wednesday.

"We've got three very winnable games ahead of us and a huge chance ahead of us to qualify for the quarter-finals," he added.

South-African born Trott, who played at junior level for South Africa but followed his parents to England in 2002, was adamant England had the ability to beat Graeme Smith's men.

"They're obviously a well-drilled side and with (leg-spinner) Imran Tahir now in the team they have a few more options in the spin department... but they are beatable."

England have shown good form with the bat but have also been conceding a lot of runs.

"We all realise the wickets are pretty good to bat on. They are very difficult conditions (for bowling) but I am fully confident they (England's attack) are capable of performing and winning us games."

Trott is one of several players in the squad who were also involved in England's long tour of Australia but he insisted burn-out was not an issue.

"We have got to remember it is a World Cup, and you might only come to one World Cup. I think it is very dangerous to think about how much cricket we have played in the last couple of months."

Trott has enjoyed a successful England career since making a century on Test debut against Australia at The Oval in 2009 with the one blip coming on a tour of South Africa, where the pressure appeared to get to him.

But he said the prospect of playing the Proteas no longer phased him.

"It was one of my first tours away and you get to be more comfortable in your surroundings," said the 29-year-old Warwickshire batsman.

"And when it doesn't go your way you just take stuff and move on and it is one of those things. You always learn from the experiences that come your way.

The Ireland match saw Trott equal the record for the fastest 1,000 runs in one-day internationals. He reached the landmark in 21 innings, equalling the record previously shared by West Indies great Vivian Richards and Trott's England team-mate Kevin Pietersen.

Pressed on whether he found it strange to be in such company, he replied: "It seems to be a surprise to you more than me."

England had fitness concerns over Paul Collingwood, Graeme Swann and Pietersen but a team spokesman said all three were available for selection.

Ireland wary of India backlash

Ireland batting sensation Kevin O'Brien warned his team to beware an India World Cup backlash when the two sides meet on Sunday as the quarter-final race hots up.

India came under fire for a sloppy bowling and fielding display which allowed England to tie their 338 in Bangalore last week after letting Bangladesh make 283-9 in pursuit of 370 in the tournament opener.

But O'Brien said that the hosts' bowlers will have a point to prove in Sunday's Group B clash at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

"We have seen India's attack so many times. They have a world class performer in Zaheer Khan who is very good with the new ball, and we all know about Harbhajan Singh," said O'Brien, who hammered the fastest ever World Cup century off just 50 balls in Ireland's stunning win over England.

He said Munaf Patel and Piyush Chawla were also dangerous.

O'Brien turned 27 on Friday and is determined that India do not ruin his celebrations in a game where victory could unlock the door to the last eight.

"Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are one of the best opening pairs. They are extremely difficult to bowl to when in full flow.

"And with Sehwag, it doesn't matter even if it's the first delivery of Test match. If the ball is there to be hit, he will go for it. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan are known power-hitters."

It has been a rollercoaster few days for the Dubliner after his pyrotechnics against England saw his team chase down a 328-run victory target, the highest run chase in the history of the event.

A statement made with style

When a team gets bowled out for 58 - the fourth lowest score in World Cup history - and the other team knocks off the runs in a little over 12 overs, there isn't much scope for narratives within the match - for twists and turns that make the play interesting. In fact, there isn't much scope for a match at all. This one lasted all of 31.1 overs - significantly shorter than most Twenty20 matches.

When a scheduled 100-over match gets done and dusted in less than one third of its time, there isn't any deviation from the straight linear script of one team stomping on another until subjugation.

And indeed, when viewed in isolation, West Indies' routing of Bangladesh would not seem to offer anything other than a straight line narration of wickets and facts. However, the root of the Caribbean side turning up with so much focus and intensity today can possibly be traced back to a little before the match - before, in fact, even the World Cup started.

In the week preceding the World Cup, the International Cricket Council had come out with its latest One Day International rankings. Amongst the team rankings, one change was significant. For the first time, West Indies has slid to Number 9 on the table and Bangladesh had risen to Number 8.

Technically, therefore, Bangladesh were a superior ODI side than the West Indies. Indeed, it didn't even seem unjust, with the West Indies only having a string of defeats to show, while Bangladesh had stacked up victories against New Zealand and Zimbabwe.

Moreover, it didn't feel wrong, and a large part of that had to do with the perception of the West Indies team in the eyes of cricket fans. The West Indies are often described as a 'once-proud' cricketing nation. This is especially so in the light of their recent not-so-stellar performances, given the heady days of world domination they had enjoyed.

Under new captain Darren Sammy though, they look like shedding the 'once proud' tag, and rediscovering their pride. The performances may not quite be world-beating yet, but once the side starts playing like a proud one, results will more often than not pick up.

Only a side that takes pride in its performance could have turned it on in such style against Bangladesh. Before the tournament started, everyone expected the fourth place in the quarter finals to be a shoot-out between West Indies and Bangladesh, and given recent results and the fact that the match would be on Bangladesh soil, Bangladesh were even slight favourites for the match.

In the event, turning up with a performance that stated in unequivocal terms, "To hell with the rankings - the performance on the field will determine the better team" spoke of a fierce desire and pride in the West Indian ranks.

That is good news indeed for the world. Cricket needs to be flourishing in the Caribbean - it needs the unique flavour that only that part of the world provides, and it needs the current generation to try and live up to the deeds of their mighty predecessors.

Bangladesh captain says my worst day

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan said his team's nine-wicket rout by the West Indies on Friday was the "worst day" of his career, but insisted his side's World Cup campaign was not over.

"We did not play well at all," said Shakib after Bangladesh were shot out for their lowest one-day total of 58 in just 18.5 overs, with the West Indies cantering home in the 13th over of their innings.

"I did not expect that we would play so badly. This has to be the worst day of my career."

A sell-out crowd of 25,000 packed into the Sher-e-Bangla stadium saw the day-night match come to an end even before the lights came on, jeering the home team and throwing paper placards on the field to show their disgust.

"I am not surprised they were angry, they have every right to be," said Shakib.

"They expect a lot from us because we have done well over the past few years. But I did not think we were capable of such a defeat.

"Our fans expect us to win games against good teams, especially at home. We just did not play good cricket at all. Nothing went right other than winning the toss."

Bangladesh's score was well short of their previous low of 74 against Australia in Darwin in 2008 and was also the fourth lowest total in World Cup history.

The World Cup co-hosts, with one win from three games in Group B, were left with a mountain to climb to stay in contention for the quarter-finals.

They face England, South Africa and the Netherlands in their remaining group matches.

But Shakib said Bangladesh were not yet out of the race.

"It is definitely possible to come back," he said. "If you win two out of three matches, we may still qualify. I know it will be hard to come back after losing this game.

Lalit Modi's passport revoked

Indian authorities on Friday revoked the passport of former Indian Premier League supremo Lalit Modi, six months after he was ousted from running the lucrative tournament over graft allegations.

Modi, who now lives in London, faces criminal charges including false accounting, and accusations by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that more than 106 million dollars were misappropriated during IPL events.

The Press Trust of India news agency said that his passport was revoked in a government bid to force him to return to India over charges related to alleged foreign exchange violations, without further explaining the authorities' plans.

Modi founded the IPL in 2008 and his brash style came to personify the event, which revolutionised cricket with a money-spinning blend of international star players, Twenty20 matches and Bollywood glamour.

But the annual tournament was soon dogged by allegations of massive corporate corruption, money-laundering and tax evasion, as well as secret deals to hide teams' real owners and even links to India's criminal underworld.

Modi has consistently denied all accusations made against him and has vowed to fight to clear his name, saying he is available for questioning in Britain but will not return to India.

He lashed out on Friday over the revoking of his passport, saying on Twitter "mere allegations, investigation agencies have come up with zilch."

His lawyer Mehmood Abdi told reporters the decision was "very strange and shocking."

Pak trio deserved ICC ban, says Steve Waugh

Abu Dhabi, Feb 8(ANI): Former Australian captain Steve Waugh insists that former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir got what they deserved after being banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over spot-fixing charges.

Waugh said that though he has some sympathy for 18-year-old Amir, he was in no doubt about how Butt had disgraced his role as the nation's captain.

"That's a major deterrent. To get five years, for most players, that's your career over. And rightly so for someone like a captain of a team who is responsible for the culture and character of the team and influences younger players," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Waugh, as saying.

"The worst possible sin you can commit as a captain is to do something like that. I feel a little bit, I guess, of compassion for the young guy because he would have seen it happening with the other players."

"Butt, I don't have any sympathy for him and Mohammad Asif has sort of been a serial offender in a lot of areas. At some stage someone's got to take a stand," he added.

Butt was banned for 10 years, with five years suspended, while fast bowlers Asif and Amir were handed bans of seven years with two suspended and five years respectively.

The charges relate to alleged incidents during last year's Lord's Test against England, when Britain's 'News of the World' tabloid claimed the players were willing to deliberately bowl no-balls.

Fit Sehwag confident of India's chances

Virender Sehwag is not concerned of the injuries and dip in form to some of India's key players ahead of the ICC World Cup 2011 and feels that his side is primed to win the title in front of the home crowd.

Sehwag was ruled out of India's recent one-day series against South Africa due to a shoulder injury, raising doubts over his fitness ahead of the tournament, which starts on February 19.

"I was feeling some pain in my shoulder," Sehwag told news channel CNN-IBN. "So (I thought it was) better to quit the South Africa one-dayers)"

"I didn't want to get injured during the South Africa tour and miss the World Cup. So I came back and went to Germany to see a couple of doctors. I got a couple of injections and now I'm fine."

"I am going to the National Cricket Academy (in Bangalore) and will spend a couple of days there to check everything -- if I can bowl and throw also but if I can't, then I'll let them know. But at the moment I'm fully fit."

While Sehwag is coming out of the shoulder injury, Gautam Gambhir is recuperating from a hand injury while Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina are struggling for form. But the dashing opener contended that every cricketer goes through the rough patch at some point of time.

"I am not worried with all these (injuries and slump in form to some players). Sometimes you perform well and sometimes you don't. I was not performing well in 2006-07 but my time came in 2008, 2009 and 2010. I performed well and scored runs in both One-dayers and Tests. These things happen in every player's career. I am not concerned," he said.

"Time is coming for Indian batsmen to perform in front of the home crowd. I am looking forward to that. Everyone has not been scoring big hundreds of late but now is the time for us with World Cup round the corner. I am confident everybody will score," said Sehwag.

Asked about playing under pressure of huge expectations and a tough World Cup group comprising England, South Africa, West Indies and underdogs Bangladesh, Sehwag said the Indians have done their home work well to give their best shot at glory.

"Bangladeshi people would be expecting their side to beat us again like in 2007 World Cup. But this time we are prepared well and confident of beating them in Bangladesh. It's a revenge game for us. We will not take it lightly."

"We are playing in India and know the conditions better than other teams in our group. We know how wickets will behave. When we played against England last time, we won 5-0. Against South Africa, we have done well against them in their country and in India."

"West Indies, they have got good players in Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle and if they click on, it's difficult for us but India has a very strong side in Sachin, Gambhir, Pathan, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Raina. I am looking forward to see Yusuf Pathan in this World Cup," he said.

Sehwag said it's a special moment for him with World Cup happening in India.

"World Cup is coming to India and it is my third. Every cricketer wants to play the World Cup and I am lucky enough to have played two. I am very lucky that I am playing at home. All the players are very happy that it is happening in India. I hope we will deliver and give our best shot. If the day belongs to us, we can beat any side," said Sehwag.

Shahid Afridi has been named Pakistan captain

All-rounder Shahid Afridi has been named Pakistan captain for the World Cup starting later this month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Friday.

The Pakistan board mentioned that Afridi, who led Pakistan to their first one-day series win since late 2008 with victory over New Zealand on Thursday, will have test captain Misbah-ul-Haq as his deputy.

"PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) announces Afridi as captain of Pakistan team for the World Cup. Misbah has been announced as vice captain for the event," the board said in a statement.

PCB chief Ijaz Butt, who is with the Pakistan team in the ongoing New Zealand tour, mentioned that the decision to appoint Afridi as captain was taken after a discussion with the team management and players.

"I had detailed discussions with team management and players in New Zealand regarding captain and vice captain," Butt said.

"I am pleased to state that everyone fully endorsed these decisions," he added.

The PCB announced their final 15-member World Cup squad last month but delayed naming the captain leading to speculation their had been a tie between Afridi and Misbah, who led Pakistan to a Test series win in New Zealand.

The board did not give any explanation for the delay in naming the flamboyant all-rounder, who has appeared in 311 one-dayers, as captain.

The PCB's decision to delay naming the captain had been criticised by former players and fans.

"It doesn't make a difference whether Misbah leads the side or I lead the side because we both are playing for our country, I have never been after captaincy," Afridi had said earlier this week.

Misbah had backed Afridi as captain. "I think Afridi has done a great job as captain and he has kept the team together and every player is contributing and wants to do well. He has led well," Misbah said after his man-of-the-match performance in New Zealand on Tuesday.

Pakistan have been drawn in Group A of the Feb. 19 to April 2 World Cup alongside Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya.

Pakistan's former test captain, Rashid Latif backed the retention of Afridi for the World Cup.

"It was the logical thing to do because he has now been leading the one-day side since last year and the players are also comfortable with him and understand his leadership style," Latif told Reuters.

"If anything I don't understand what prompted the board to delay the announcement. It only led to speculation which is not good for Pakistan cricket ahead of such an important event," Latif added.

Flower worried by Bresnan injury

England coach Andy Flower says Tim Bresnan's tour-ending calf injury is the biggest worry for his team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

The English play the final one-day international of their marathon Ashes tour at Perth's WACA Ground on Sunday, before heading home for what is only a brief break for most of the players.

The 15-man English squad for the World Cup departs on February 12 and five members of that squad are currently injured, including Bresnan.

Disconcertingly, all five are valuable members of the attack, the others being Paul Collingwood (back), Stuart Broad (stomach), Graeme Swann (back), Ajmal Shahzad (hamstring), while Chris Tremlett would probably be the obvious late inclusion if any of that group failed to prove their fitness, but he too is sidelined by a side strain.

Flower said Bresnan's calf was the biggest concern.

"Probably it's Bresnan, considering the sight of his injury, just above his Achilles tendon in his lower calf," Flower said when asked which player was in most doubt.

"But he's not a man who has suffered injuries, well not many injuries, in the past and hopefully he will recover very quickly and be ready somewhere near the start."

Flower admitted the injuries were far from ideal so close to the tournament, which starts in under three weeks.

"Of course the timing of them getting back to full fitness is important for the start of the World Cup," Flower said.

"We can't be absolutely certain of that at this stage but we are monitoring them on a daily basis."

The Ashes tour has dragged on beyond three months and Collingwood was the fifth player to fly home during the seven-match ODI series, while Broad was sent back to the UK during the Test series.

Flower had no doubt the length of the tour was the reason for the spate of injuries and that England's World Cup preparation had suffered as a result.

He said he would like to be consulted on his team's playing schedule in future, although he admitted this wasn't always feasible.

"Without a doubt the length of the tour is a reason for the injuries," he said.

"We've been here over three months now and with the intensity at which the guys play their cricket, and with the intensity that we demand in training, it is no surprise that people will pick up injuries and break down at the end of a long, hard tour.

"It would be quite sensible to look at how these tours are set up, especially this close to a World Cup, however, these are the schedules that we are given and we will deal with them as well as we can."

After embarrassment at the Ashes, Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson says the defending champions are still the side to beat at the upcoming World Cup.

Australia's horrific 3-1 belting in the Ashes series has given way to a dominant performance in the seven-match one-day international series against England, with the home side leading 5-1 against the tiring tourists.

The final match is being played at the WACA Ground in Perth on Sunday, and the hosts have decided to rest captain Michael Clarke, coming off his best batting form in two months, and star all-rounder Shane Watson.

The pair have been replaced by local batsman Adam Voges and forgotten spinner Jason Krejza.

It is Australia's last match before their World Cup defence, in which they will be aiming at a fourth straight title, and their preparation hasn't gone smoothly despite the one-sided ODI series scoreline.

The final make-up of Australia's 15-man World Cup squad remains shrouded in mystery, with squad members Ricky Ponting (finger), Mike Hussey (hamstring) and Nathan Hauritz (shoulder) all battling serious injuries.

Reserves Shaun Marsh (hamstring) and Xavier Doherty (back) are also unfit, but Johnson said confidence in the camp was rising all the time.

"It is a bit of a different side, but there are a lot of guys there who have played one-day cricket for Australia," Johnson said.

"The guys coming in like Voges and Krejza have done well for their states as well.

"I think we've still got a well-balanced one-day side going into this last game, and we are taking a lot of confidence into it and then onto the World Cup.

"We are still the number one one-day side in the world so hopefully we win this series 6-1."

Australia enter the World Cup as the number one ranked side in one-day cricket, but if they need any proof that pre-tournament form doesn't count for much they only need look back to their 2007 campaign.

They lost their last five ODIs before the World Cup in the West Indies, but then went through the tournament unbeaten.

They have won their last 23 World Cup matches, their only blemish in their last 29 games the famous tie with South Africa in the semi-final at Headingley in 1999, which still enabled the Australians to advance to the final.

SYDNEY, Feb 2 (AFP): Australia conjured up their biggest ever successful run chase to beat England by two wickets in a thrilling sixth one-day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground today.

After a Jonathan Trott century helped England post their highest ever ODI score against Australia of 333-6, the home side batted their way into contention, needing six to win off the final over with two wickets in hand.

Tailender John Hastings edged a boundary off the second delivery from youngster Chris Woakes to hand Australia victory with four balls to spare, the home side making 334-8.

It was Australia’s record run chase in an ODI and extended their lead over the tourists in the seven-match series to 5-1 with one game to play.

Captain Michael Clarke’s late season return to form continued as he smashed 82 from 70 balls to lead the unlikely chase, with late support from David Hussey, who made 38.

The match seemed to be England’s to lose with Australia needing 70 off 48 balls, but the pair took 16 off James Anderson’s eighth over — the 44th of the innings.

They followed it up by notching 14 off Anderson’s ninth as the England bowler went on to finish with a disastrous 91 runs from his 10 overs.

Shane Watson, with 51 off 34 balls, got the home side off to a flying start in reply to what had the look of a match-winning total by England, before falling to the spin of Michael Yardy.

Mitchell Johnson was promoted to number four and made 57 before being stumped from the bowling of Kevin Pietersen, while the recalled Callum Ferguson was run out for 46.

An Australian win seemed unlikely after Trott’s second century of the series helped England post what was also their highest ODI score in Australia.

Trott continued his superb series by making 137, taking his haul for the series to 361 runs at 72.20, the English number three the leading scorer for either side despite his team’s indifferent form.

Before falling to the second-last ball of the innings Trott was offered good support by captain Andrew Strauss, who made 63 from just 69 balls, and Ian Bell, with 45 from 32 deliveries.

Trott, was earlier given out lbw on 82 to Shaun Tait but handed a reprieve after a review of the decision, reached triple figures for the fourth time in ODIs from exactly 100 balls, having hit seven boundaries.

In an outstanding game for the England man he took a brilliant catch to remove Brad Haddin (20), and bowled during the Australian innings.

NEW DELHI: India included three spinners and dropped Rohit Sharma in their final 15-member squad for the ICC cricket World Cup selected by the five-member selection panel led by K Srikanth in Chennai on Monday.

The list of 30 probables were pruned to half and no big star is left out of the final squad for the mega-event starting February 19.

The top-seven of the Indian batting-order -- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni -- are in the team as expected and Yusuf Pathan take the all-rounder's berth.

The inspirational Zaheer Khan lead the pace attack and his pacer partners will be the trio of Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar. S Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma failed to make the cut.

Harbhajan Singh will spearhead the slow bowling department with Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin as his spin partner. Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha were also vying for the slot.

Just a day before the selection meeting, doubts have arisen over Sachin Tendulkar's availability after he pulled out of the remainder of the ODI series in South Africa as a precautionary measure after sustaining a hamstring injury during Saturday's second match.

But going by indications, the injury is not serious and Tendulkar will be making his sixth World Cup appearance.

Pathan power extends India's domination of New Zealand

Yusuf Pathan finally brought to international cricket the brutal hitting and useful off-spin he's known for in domestic cricket. Figures of 3-49 were followed by a 79-ball hundred --- in the end an unbeaten 123 off 96 --- as India comfortably chased down New Zealand's 315-7 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Parthiv Patel's 52 set the chase up while Saurabh Tiwary's 37 gave Yusuf much-needed company in finishing the game off from a tricky situation made trickier by a rain interruption.

James Franklin's quick-paced 98 off 69 powered New Zealand past 300 after they yet again lost middle order wickets to Indian spin. The left-handed all-rounder has eased into the spot left vacant by the big-hitting Jacob Oram.

While he was New Zealand's only bright spot in this game, his efforts were not enough to prevent New Zealand extending their winless streak to 11 matches. India lead the series 4-0 and Daniel Vettori's best chance of avoiding a whitewash in Chennai may be through a washout.

Parthiv returned to ODIs after six years, making his first fifty that spurred the chase after a tentative start. Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli --- India's best batsmen in this series --- fell in one over to Andy McKay. Gambhir slapped a long-hop to point while Kohli's over-confident hook shot on zero settled safely into long leg's grasp.

This was the ideal chance for Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma to make a big contribution. While Yuvraj warmed up nicely with a flat six over midwicket off Scott Styris, he disappointingly fell on 20 to Nathan McCullum. A slightly short ball was pulled low to the short midwicket.

Rohit was lucky to last more than two balls. Off his second, a huge inside edge off Vettori was caught behind but Amiesh Saheba said not out, possibly believing the loud appeal to be for an LBW. Vettori wasn't pleased; he argued with Saheba but it was too late.

India had slipped to 108-4 when Rohit and Yusuf steadied them with an 80-run stand. Rohit was needed to build on but holed out to mid-on. It left Yusuf with only Tiwary.

India were lucky to win this game. At the rain interruption, they were 17 runs behind the Duckworth-Lewis target of 220 in 36 overs. When the game resumed nearly at 10.20 PM, no overs were deducted but India still needed a stiff 113 from 14 overs.

After the break, Yusuf pounded Vettori first ball over long-on for six, raising his fifty. It was the third six Yusuf had taken off Vettori. Every one of them was effortlessly muscled past the ropes. Two overs later, a length ball from Kyle Mills bounced off the roof over midwicket, into the car park behind it.

The game slipped out of New Zealand's grasp in Mills' next over, the 43rd of the innings. It was a critical over since India were 13 runs behind on the D/L chart, and it had begun drizzling again.

Yusuf read the situation perfectly. The first ball flew over extra cover for four; the second was miscued over short fine leg for two; the third was flicked in the same area for four as was the fourth --- a full toss --- which bounced once before crashing into the boards. Suddenly, the rain had stopped.

The fifth delivery was on length, sat up nicely, and Yusuf lined it up for the stands behind deep midwicket. Having moved to 77 to 99 in that over, Yusuf reached his hundred by swiping McKay over midwicket for his sixth six of the innings.

So gobsmacked were New Zealand, despite India needing 51 from 42 at the start of the over, there was going to be only one winner there on. Such was Yusuf's domination towards the end of the game, when his partnership with Tiwary reached hundred, the young left-hander's contribution to it was just 17.

A couple of overs of peace prevailed before Yusuf broke it by half-heartedly ploughing a yorker-length ball from McKay for another six over midwicket.

Despite losing this rain-hit game this easily, New Zealand had for the first time in the series dominated sections of this game. Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum signalled their all-or-nothing intent when Praveen Kumar's first over was taken for 14 runs. After a quick start of 62, Guptill drove Ashish Nehra to Yuvraj Singh's hands at cover.

First McCullum and then Ross Taylor searched for form, found it, couldn't build on, and fell to R Ashwin. McCullum's 42 (42b) had 38 runs in boundaries, but only four runs off the other 33 balls. Taylor (44, 73b) seemed set but fell off the first ball of the Power Play to Ashwin, who has settled nicely into the role of an attacking spinner. He's gone for runs but has provided wickets.

Yusuf finished India's tidiest bowler on the day --- Nehra had 2-70 in nine --- he removed Scott Styris, Vettori and Mills before Franklin's clean hitting produced 63 runs off the final five overs.

DAMBULLA, Aug 9: Missing key players and just done with an exhausting drawn Test series, India swiftly shift to the one-day mode as they take on an equally-depleted New Zealand in the opening match of the tri-series starting on Tuesday.

Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan remains sidelined with a shoulder injury, which might give a woefully out-of-form Ishant Sharma his first one-day international of the year.

Ashish Nehra will take over the responsibility of leading the attack and on current form, the lanky pacer would be expected to add some zing to the not-so-impressive pace department, which struggled in the Test series.

On the batting front, the series is a chance for off-colour Yuvraj Singh to get over the disappointment of the Test series, in which he flopped in the opening match, missed the second due to flu, and was dropped for the third after his replacement Suresh Raina scored a century on debut.

Virender Sehwag will once again shoulder the responsibility of providing the sort of cracking starts that India have come to expect of him and Gambhir’s absence, Dinesh Karthik will give him company in the opening slot.

A rather volatile mix of batsmen occupy the middle-order in Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma, who can be destructive while they are on song but their unpredictability can also cost the team dearly.

Young and eager to make a mark, the new-look Indian middle-order has often let the team down with extravagant shots in crunch situations.

The New Zealanders, on the other hand, are in their familiar dark-horses role, more so in the absence of inspirational skipper Daniel Vettori, who has skipped the series to be with his wife for the birth of his second child.

Also missing from the Kiwi line-up is the explosive duo of Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum.

While McCullum has been granted some time off with family by New Zealand Cricket, the temperamental Ryder is nursing an elbow injury.

Sans the three proven match-winners, the Kiwis will have to come up with a superlative effort to make an impact in the series against the sub-continental giants.

Destructive batsman Ross Taylor has been handed the leadership role for the series and it would take a lot for him to inspire an inexperienced squad.

He has started well with morale-boosting wins in the couple of practice matches the team played after landing in the island nation.

But against the Indians, the Kiwis would be looking forward to experienced all-rounder Jacob Oram, vice-captain Kyle Mills and Scott Styris for inspiration.

The deal has mandated the two companies to manage Dhoni's various endorsements and brand assosiations besides his corporate profile, patents and digital rights.

Singapore/Melbourne, July 1: Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday took over the reins of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on a day when the game’s governing body stood divided in two blocks following the rejection of former Australian prime minister John Howard's nomination for the vice president's post. Pawar, however, attempted to downplay the brouhaha.

Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC), which floated Howard's nomination, were left seething in anger as the strong African and Asian block, including the Indian cricket board, opposed Howard’s candidature at the ICC executive board meeting on Wednesday. Only England, Australia and New Zealand supported Howard, thus forcing the ICC to ask CA and NZC to withdraw his nomination.

Howard was adamant, saying he was not withdrawing his nomination. “I won’t be withdrawing,” the Australian media quoted Howard as saying on Thursday.

Pawar, 69, who took over as ICC president from David Morgan Thursday, had openly backed Howard for the job but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) backtracked, rejecting Howard's candidature.

No reason was provided for the rejection of Howard's nomination, though it is understood that his opposition to Robert Mugabe's regime in Zimbabwe and his outspoken views on Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's controversial bowling action were some of the reasons behind his rejection.

Pawar, 69, who became the second Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya to occupy the top ICC post, sought to downplay the issue.

“What is the political connotation? There is no question of political connotation,” Pawar said at a press conference in Singapore.

“No, I don’t think so at all (that there will be a divide). We have discussed the matter individually and collectively with everybody including Australia, England and New Zealand also. We took a collective decision," Pawar told Indian news channel CNN-IBN in an interview.

“I’m not worried because it's a democratic organisation. According to the ICC constitution if any four members oppose a proposal, it cannot be passed. That's why we have requested Australia and New Zealand to give a second thought and come out with a new proposal," he added.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said the Council is not obliged to spell out the reason for Howard's failed nomination.

“The ICC does not have give those reasons. There were not sufficient number of directors in support of the nomination, (it) did not go to a vote and the outcome was to request Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket to reconsider their nomination," Lorgat said.

The ICC has asked Australia and New Zealand to nominate a new candidate by the end of August.

“We (will) wait for their recommendation," Pawar said.

Had Howard been elected, he would have succeeded Pawar as ICC president in 2012.

Not mincing words, CA chairman Jack Clarke said he felt "gutted and deeply disappointed".

“If you keep having processes that don't work, or are not allowed to work, I am not too sure where they go from there. John wasn't putting his hand up for this job, he was asked by us,” added Clarke.

“You hope it doesn't affect the relationship but it obviously puts a block there for a while and makes you wary."

Although Clarke did not blame India for Howard's rejection, he reasoned the country's financial clout in the ICC had guided the outcome.

“In any business model where a company has 75 per cent of the income, it’s not an ideal model,” he said. “But that is not India’s fault ... it’s a powerful bloc but it’s a reality of life,” Fox Sports quoted Clarke as saying.

New Zealand Cricket chairman Alan Isaac found the rejection of Howard's nomination unacceptable. "We have been unable to get a reason for the lack of support for our nomination and it's just not acceptable," Isaac said.

Pawar's overwhelming support in BCCI has waned after his support of Lalit Modi during the Indian Premier League controversy, and with the latest row over Howard, the veteran politican will have much in hand during his tenure.

Should CA and NZC decide to admit defeat on Howard, it is likely that former NZC and ICC administrator John Anderson would be sought again, having lost out to the former Australian prime minister in a selection process that was hotly-debated by the two countries.

Former ICC CEO Malcolm Speed said Howard was rejected because of his opposition to Robert Mugabe's regime in Zimbabwe.

“Rest assured, he (Howard) was not rejected because of his lack of experience as a cricket administrator, his strong opposition to Robert Mugabe's disastrous regime in Zimbabwe or his outspoken views about Muttiah Muralitharan's controversial bowling action. There is more to it than that,” Speed said in his column in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Speed also alleged Pawar knows little about cricket administration.

“The man who is to be the next ICC president, Sharad Pawar, is the Minister for Agriculture in the Indian government - a serious full-time job, feeding 1.2 billion people. He is a good and fair man but he will be working part-time as ICC president and, take it from me, he knows little about cricket administration,” Speed said. (IANS)

Wayne Rooney (England)

Capable of scoring from any angle and playing any role in the attack, the Manchester United forward is still only 24 years old and this tournament is by no means his last chance at glory on the international stage.

Rooney, who can operate effectively as a lone striker or alongside a bigger target man, has it all -- an ability to run at defenders, lead the line, play as a second striker and track back into deeper roles. But the main reason defenders fear him so much is his clinical finishing.

He may suffer from not having a threatening strike partner in the England set-up but if anyone is capable of shouldering all the responsibility for scoring and creating goals it is Rooney.

Ronaldo's billboard presence has certainly helped the Real Madrid winger's marketability but it his deft touch, pace and imagination that makes the 25-year-old such a handful.

Injury disrupted Kaka's season at Real Madrid last term but, after the disappointment of losing in the quarter-finals four years ago, a fit Kaka in a more balanced Brazil lineup will have the perfect chance to show his class. He is light-footed on the ball, a superb passer and has a striker's instinct for goal.

Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon)

Three-times African Footballer of the Year and a three time Champions League winner, Eto'o has been stung by criticism from former Cameroon forward Roger Milla that he had not truly delivered for his country.

Two African Cup of Nations titles and important goals in qualification for these finals suggest Eto'o, has some justification in considering the comments unfair. The finals present a great chance for him to cement his reputation as one of the finest forwards produced by the continent.

FIVE TO WATCH OUT FOR

Teko Modise (South Africa)

Largely because he plays in domestic South African football with Orlando Pirates, midfield playmaker Modise has mostly escaped attention outside his home continent but the 27-year-old now has the chance to show his quality on a global stage.

Modise is the ideal central midfielder for the quick-passing style of Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. As well as having the right vision and imagination he possesses impressive pace. If he performs at his best a nice contract from abroad should bring him just reward from this tournament.

Ri Myong-guk (North Korea)

There will be few busier goalies at the World Cup than Ri Myong-guk but North Korea's 'Gatekeeper of the Iron Wall' thrives under pressure.

Ri gave up his dreams of becoming a striker to answer his country's goalkeeping call and will face some of the world's deadliest forwards when North Korea face Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast in Group G.

Ri is an inspirational figure for his team mates and has been known to sing North Korea's rousing national anthem when the going gets tough.

Marek Hamsik (Slovakia)

The 22-year-old playmaker with spiky dark hair was Napoli's top scorer in his first two seasons after joining the Serie A club in 2007. Effective on the left and in the middle, he played a key part in sending Slovakia to their first World Cup.

His idol is former Czech creative midfielder Pavel Nedved, who also plied his trade in Italy with Lazio and Juventus after making a name for himself at Euro 96.

With his pace and keen eye for goal Hamsik could follow in the footsteps of his hero in catching the eye of some bigger clubs while on international duty in South Africa.

Giovani Dos Santos (Mexico)

An exciting talent who has yet to live up to his promise in European club football -- where he has struggled for opportunities with Barcelona and current club Tottenham Hotspur -- the half-Brazilian forward has shone at international level.

He was voted Player of the Tournament in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup and delivered a sublime performance in World Cup qualifying against Costa Rica where he scored with a 20 metre strike and then created the other two goals.

Light-footed and imaginative, he has drawn comparisons with Ronaldinho and if Mexico can get their flowing passing game going expect Dos Santos to be at the heart of it.

Samir Handanovic (Slovenia)

Slovenia's surprise qualification had much to do with the superb performances of goalkeeper Handanovic. He kept clean sheets in seven of 12 games and was the hero of the playoff win over Russia after a series of fine saves in the dying minutes.

A superb shot-stopper but also a good organiser, Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek has named him the best goalkeeper in the world and if he lives up to his billing Handanovic could well find himself with one of the world's big clubs after the finals.

Buzz Up Buoyant Proteas eye Test series success over W.Indies

PORT OF SPAIN: South Africa have every reason to start their three-Test series with West Indies on Thursday at Queen's Park Oval in a confident mood.

The South Africans swept the preceding limited-overs matches, comprising two Twenty20 and five One-day Internationals.

Though the visitors would concede that Tests are far different, they enter the series with the confidence of returning to the winning habit, and the full knowledge that their opponents appear to be in disarray.

But the Proteas' vice-captain Jacques Kallis was still cautious about a West Indies side, which is quite unpredictable.

"This is a very different form of the game, and in many ways this is a fresh start to the tour," he said.

"The West Indies can be a very dangerous side, and it is important that we set our standard from the start.

"We've just got to be on the top of the game, and control it, and if we play to our true potential, we will walk away with the series."

No doubt West Indies have been under pressure from their demanding public, which has become sick not so much by the losses, but the manner in which their side has meekly surrendered matches from positions of comfort.

It was clearly evident throughout the limited-overs matches, where West Indies could easily have won one of the T20Is, and two or three of the ODIs had they played more professionally.

"When we watch South Africa, we know they are beatable," said embattled West Indies captain Chris Gayle.

"We came close, and we fell short, but one positive we can take away is that we know they are beatable. We just hope that we can change things around for the Tests.

"We can beat them! We have done it once in South Africa, so there is no reason we can't beat them on home soil."

Naturally, both sides have made changes to their line-ups to boost their chances in the longest format of the game.

The South Africans have strengthened their batting with the choice of Ashwell Prince in the middle-order ahead of left-hander David Miller.

They have also fortified their bowling with Paul Harris replacing Roelof van der Merwe, and Wayne Parnell returning to the line-up for veteran Charl Langeveldt.

The West Indies selectors have resisted the urge to make sweeping changes, with left-handed batsman Brendan Nash, as well as the uncapped pair of off-spinner Shane Shillingford and fast bowler Nelon Pascal shoring up the bulk of the limited-overs squad.

South Africa have dominated West Indies in Tests since their re-entry into international cricket following international isolation.

They have won 14, and lost three of the 22 matches between the two sides, and two of the wins came at Port of Spain in 2001 and 2005 in the two Tests the sides have played here.

West Indies have slumped to six losses and five draws in their last 11 Tests, after their sensational innings and 23-run victory over England last year at Kingston.

Nine of the last 10 Tests at this venue have finished in an outright win, which gives rise to the assertion that the pitch is a result-oriented surface.

Fortunately for South Africa, West Indies have been on the right side on only two occasions, and last year's match against England ended in a tense draw.

It typically offers a wide range of behaviour for the bowlers, with swing and lateral movement for the fast men, giving way to a spinner's paradise over the last couple of days.

With the Test series being played in the opening month of the Caribbean storm season, the weather report makes unhappy reading with scattered and isolated thunderstorms apparently on the horizon.
