New Delhi, Feb 16: Ever since he took over as coach, the Indian team has witnessed a significant rise in all forms of the game and Gary Kirsten had little doubts in declaring his wards as the best in Test cricket.
“I think India are the top Test team in the world,” Kirsten said in an interview on SportsCentre.
Kirsten, who began his stint with the Indian team last year on the Australian tour, said it was a tough competition for the top spot in the world with more than a couple of teams fighting for the numero uno position.
“I think it’s great that there are three or four sides now that are vying for the top place.”
“I think teams are now believing they can beat Australia so the gap’s been closed in terms of Australia coming back into the pack. So the opportunity to become the best side in the world is up for grabs over the next year or two,” he added.
The former South African opener further pointed out that he adapted rather well to the Indian ways of thinking which also proved a huge factor in the success of the team and said now he was at with his wards.
“We learnt a few things up front, certainly when I first started out in terms of thinking and strategy and philosophies.”
“I began to understand how the Indians work and a lot of people have said to me well ‘you are a foreign coach’. I certainly don’t feel like one.”
“I really integrated my thinking into the Indian way and just really enjoying the process,” he stated.
Now that the Indian team has achieved a fair amount of success last year, Kirsten said the main goal for him and the team would be end up as the best in the world.
“We are very keen to become the best cricket team in the world. We are not far off it but we know we’ve got a way to go.” “We know we got the skills to be able to do that. In all forms of the game, we feel that we can be the number one in the world,” The left-handed Protean said he was well aware of the expectations from the Indian fans which makes the players to be even more careful.
“We have to be careful. The Indian public rightly so are expecting results on a regular basis.” The Indian Premier League (IPL) also came in for a lot of praises from Kirsten who believes that the the Twenty20 tournament, “exposes young players to the high profile nature, to the pressure that International cricket brings.” (Agencies)
